In an era filled with countless reinterpretations and revivals, one cherished film that is unlikely to be redone is “Home Alone.” Director Chris Columbus has expressed his opposition to remaking the 1990 classic, especially as it approaches its 35th anniversary.
“Home Alone stands out not just as a product of its time but as a unique cinematic event that cannot be replicated,” Columbus explained during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet. “Attempting to recreate what we accomplished 35 years ago would be a mistake. It’s best to leave it as it is.”
Columbus pointed out a significant issue with many of today’s cinematic reboots and remakes, emphasizing that the original movie’s success was a rare occurrence—a perfect storm of elements that is nearly impossible to reproduce.

Meanwhile, Macaulay Culkin, who became a star playing Kevin McAllister in the film, mentioned last year that he would consider returning to the series if the conditions were favorable. “I have some ideas, but with two kids, I just don’t have the time to write anything,” he revealed during a Q&A following a movie screening.
The original “Home Alone,” penned by John Hughes, a notable figure from the 1980s, not only catapulted Culkin to fame but also secured a sequel for the production team at 20th Century Fox. This sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” was released two years after the original. The series continued with a different lead actor in “Home Alone 3” in 1997, followed by “Home Alone 4” in 2002, and “Home Alone: The Holiday Heist” a decade later.
The latest addition to the “Home Alone” series, “Home Sweet Home Alone,” was launched in 2021.
