Gearbox has announced another delay for the much-anticipated patch for Borderlands 4, aimed at reducing the effectiveness of critical hit knife builds. This update is now set to be released during the Horrors of Kairos mini-event.
Initially scheduled for release last week, the ‘Day 30 Update’ for Borderlands 4 was postponed to early this week. However, it failed to appear as expected, leading to inquiries from the community. In response, Gearbox confirmed the update would be launched in conjunction with the Horrors of Kairos event, which is active from October 23 to November 6.
On social media, Gearbox has expressed its enthusiasm for the upcoming update, stating, “We’re just putting the final touches on a few aspects, and it will roll out during the Horrors of Kairos mini-event. We’re excited for you to see what we’ve been working on.”
It remains unclear when exactly within this period the patch will become available. The Horrors of Kairos event begins on October 23, but the update might be released anytime up until November 6.
Recently, Gearbox addressed concerns from Borderlands 4 players who questioned the necessity of nerfing powerful builds in a game that is primarily single-player. The developers explained that such changes are crucial for maintaining the game’s challenge and promoting diversity in player strategies.
Players are preparing for the modification of builds centered around what has been termed ‘the crit knife,’ an exploit Gearbox plans to adjust with the upcoming patch.
Borderlands 4 features several overpowering builds that deal substantial damage, making even the most challenging bosses relatively easy to defeat. The crit knife build is notably infamous for its effectiveness.
The impending nerf has sparked a debate among the community concerning the appropriateness of such balance adjustments in a single-player context. While some players argue that overpowering builds harm the game’s integrity, others feel it enhances their gaming experience since there is no competitive play.

In light of these discussions, Borderlands 4 creative director Graeme Timmins mentioned the game’s forthcoming Invincible boss, which is intended to be a significant challenge for players.
“We are developing future content, like the upcoming Invincible boss, that should provide a meaningful challenge and sense of achievement,” Timmins stated. “Balancing this content around weak gear would limit the variety of viable builds, pushing players towards a narrow selection of strategies.”
Regarding the crit knife, associate creative director Grant Kao confirmed plans to adjust this build, noting that it reduces the variety of gameplay styles and hinted at additional options soon to be available for players who favor gun-based builds.
Timmins added, “Our goal is always to expand the range of viable builds, and any changes we implement aim to support this objective.”
The gaming community is now keenly watching to see how Gearbox will adjust not only the crit knife build but other builds as well that may involve unintended mechanics.
Earlier this month, Gearbox unveiled Borderlands 4 Bounty Pack 1: How Rush Saved Mercenary Day, the first seasonal mini-event, along with the aforementioned Invincible boss. Last month, they introduced the first of two new Vault Hunters coming with the paid Story Pack DLCs. Named C4SH, this character is set to debut in early 2026 and features luck-based abilities that can make him exceptionally powerful or notably weak.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently commented on the importance of understanding player decisions regarding loot to create competitive games in the genre.
