Fiona Apple has just unveiled her latest track since the release of Fetch the Bolt Cutters. The song titled “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)” is a powerful protest song aimed at advocating for incarcerated mothers who are unable to post bail. This song has been inspired by Apple’s personal experiences from her time spent attending bail hearings with CourtWatch PG in Maryland. This organization strives to combat racism in the judiciary and is committed to creating a future without prisons. Apple was moved to write this song after witnessing firsthand the severe and often disproportionate effects the cash-bail system has on Black women, incarcerating mothers without trial and separating them from their children.
Apple’s Personal Statement
In her own words, Apple shared her thoughts and experiences:
Over and over again, I heard how individuals were imprisoned simply because they couldn’t afford their freedom. It was especially painful to listen to mothers and caretakers being separated from their loved ones. Over the last five years, I’ve been involved with the Free Black Mamas DMV bailout, where I’ve been fortunate enough to see the stories of women who, with relentless and loving support from the leaders, have fought for and secured their freedom. I hope this song, alongside the images shared with me, highlights the critical consequences of pretrial detention. I dedicate this song to all those who have suffered the agony of such detentions and to the women leaders of this group who have imparted so much wisdom to me and whom I hold dear.
Support and Advocacy
“Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)” is part of a broader effort by Fiona Apple to support the Free Black Mamas DMV initiative. She has also set up a dedicated website, Let Her Go Home, where individuals can donate, discover local bail funds, and learn about the importance of court-watching.
While this track marks her first original piece since Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Apple has stayed musically active, releasing a number of covers and collaborations. Among these are a recent rendition of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” and a collaboration titled “Letter From an Unknown Girlfriend” with the Waterboys.
Through her latest musical release and ongoing advocacy, Fiona Apple continues to use her voice and platform to highlight and combat the injustices faced by underprivileged groups, particularly incarcerated mothers unable to afford bail.
