A Minecraft Movie's New Trailer Shows A Creeper Exploding And Lots More

Upcoming Release: A Minecraft Movie

Set for release on April 4, A Minecraft Movie is the latest video game adaptation to hit the big screen. In a fresh promotional push, Warner Bros. unveiled a new trailer scheduled to premiere during the NBA All-Star Weekend from February 14-16. This latest preview merges live-action sequences featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa with computer-generated imagery of iconic Minecraft characters such as Creepers and Villagers.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the unique visual style of the film. Audiences will find the blend of reality and CGI particularly striking, with several memorable moments, including a dramatic Creeper explosion that is sure to capture attention.

The film features a star-studded cast including Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge alongside Black and Momoa. While the original Minecraft game is known for its open-ended gameplay rather than a narrative structure, the movie introduces a substantial plot.

The storyline revolves around four unlikely heroes—portrayed by Momoa, Hansen, Myers, and Brooks—who find themselves transported through a portal to the Minecraft Overworld. This new environment is filled with dangers and adventures, and the group must band together to combat threats such as Piglins and Zombies on their quest to find a way back home. Jack Black takes on the role of Steve, an expert crafter who aids the group in their journey.

Production Insights

The film’s direction is led by Jared Hess, known for his Oscar-nominated works such as Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, with several producers from Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, involved in the project.

Initially, Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame was set to direct the Minecraft adaptation with a substantial budget of $150 million from Warner Bros. However, following a change in leadership at Warner Bros., the project under McElhenney was shelved. Before McElhenney, director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, proposed a Goonies-style adventure for the film which was ultimately turned down by Mojang, leading to his departure from the project.

The screenplay for A Minecraft Movie was penned by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, setting the stage for its release on April 4, 2025.

Other Video Game Adaptations

A Minecraft Movie isn’t the only video game-based film slated for release in April 2025. Sony’s adaptation of Until Dawn is also expected to premiere later that month, on April 25.
