The Future of Entertainment: Interactive and Sports-Driven Unscripted Shows

Alejandro Rincón, CEO of Endemol Shine Boomdog, one of the leading independent production companies in Latin America, foresees a surge in popularity for interactive and sports-themed unscripted television programs. The company, headquartered in Mexico City, is currently developing several interactive projects, as well as a sports-oriented unscripted series named “Copa Combate” in collaboration with La Jaula Studios. This upcoming six-episode series will spotlight the “Copa Combate,” a prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) one-night event featuring an eight-fighter, single-elimination tournament.

The Evolution of Endemol Shine Boomdog

In a detailed interview with The Bangin Beats, Rincón recounted the origins and growth of his company, which started in Venezuela as Cinema Concept. Founded in 1997, Rincón, equipped with degrees in Social Communication and Graphic Design, initially focused on creating graphic packages for emerging cable companies.

His early collaborations included working with major cable operators like Sony, Warner, Disney, and HBO, for whom he produced small interstitial programs that incorporated branding and promotional elements. However, as Venezuela’s political and economic landscapes became increasingly unstable, leading to the withdrawal of cable companies, Rincón and his business partner Carlos Perna relocated to Mexico City in 2007 and rebranded their company as Boomdog.

In Mexico, they expanded their scope to include producing original show formats for cable networks. Their productions included “Ya es mediodía en China” for Sony, “Mexico’s Next Top Model” also for Sony, “Fashion Police” for E! Entertainment, and “The Soup” for the same network.

Their work caught the attention of Endemol, which started outsourcing some of its production work in Mexico to Boomdog. This partnership flourished over the years, culminating in a joint venture agreement with Endemol in 2017. Following this, Boomdog began managing Endemol’s catalog for Mexico and the U.S. Hispanic market. This expansion occurred at a time when traditional cable was declining, and networks were beginning to open up to collaborations with third-party production houses. In 2020, following the acquisition of Endemol by Banijay, Boomdog became part of the Banijay Group, the largest independent production entity globally.

“This synergy has propelled our growth, establishing us as the premier production powerhouse in Latin America, producing over 1,000 hours of independent content annually,” Rincón stated. Under his leadership, Endemol Shine Boomdog has produced critically acclaimed series for major networks and streaming platforms such as Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision, Azteca, Imagen, Amazon Prime, and MAX. Notable productions include “La Casa de los Famosos,” “MasterChef Celebrity,” and “¿Quién es la máscara?”

Expanding Operations and Strategic Partnerships

Today, Endemol Shine Boomdog oversees three distinct production labels in Mexico City: Endemol Shine Boomdog for unscripted shows, the scripted content label A Fábrica Mexico & U.S. Hispanic, and the unscripted label Banijay Mexico and U.S. Hispanic, managed by Marie Leguizamo and launched in 2021.

Rincón manages these divisions alongside Ben Samek, CEO of Banijay Americas, and Laurens Drillich, president of Shine Latino. Drillich played a pivotal role in merging Brazil’s A Fábrica with Boomdog to establish the new scripted label, leveraging his extensive experience and strategic vision to significantly drive the company’s growth.

“Breaking into the Mexican and U.S. Hispanic markets as an independent producer was challenging, but our partnership with Alejandro has been transformative. His commitment and vision have been crucial in establishing our dominant position in the region,” Drillich commented.

The company’s sprawling facilities in Mexico City cover approximately 96,875 square feet and include two large studios and a dedicated 24/7 post-production facility, Wide Angle, which opened in 2022 in the upscale neighborhood of Polanco. Additionally, Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic, also located in Polanco, has produced popular shows like “LOL: Last One Laughing” and “Temptation Island” for Amazon Prime.

With a core team of 120 permanent staff and about 1,000 rotating personnel monthly, Endemol Shine Boomdog continues to lead in the production of high-quality, impactful content. Their latest major project, the HBO Max series “Like Water for Chocolate,” is currently in production for its second season, representing their most ambitious and successful venture to date.

“Our focus is not on the quantity of content but on its impact and relevance. We strive to stay closely aligned with the market and our partners, ensuring that our projects resonate well with audiences,” Rincón emphasized, highlighting the company’s commitment to innovation and quality in entertainment.
