Exciting New Addition to Your Board Game Collection: Doom Enters the Tabletop Arena
The iconic video game Doom is making its way to tabletop gaming, thanks to a new Kickstarter campaign. The initiative, which just launched, introduces “Doom the Arena Board Game,” transforming the classic virtual demon-slaying adventure into a dynamic board game experience. This game joins “Vampire Survivors” in the trend of adapting popular video games into board games, complete with an array of sinister miniatures. Additionally, a special version called “Doom: The Dark Ages” is also on offer, featuring its own unique set of miniatures.
This project is officially licensed by id Software and Bethesda and has been crafted in collaboration with Resurrectionist Games. Modiphius is overseeing the development and publication. The Kickstarter aims to hit a funding goal of $133,000 and has already garnered about $50,000 at the time of reporting.
The campaign describes the game as designed to “bring the DOOM experience to the tabletop.” Players will use weapons and abilities inspired by the video games, commanding legions of iconic characters and creatures represented by detailed PVC miniatures. “Doom the Arena Board Game” is likened to a “heavy metal chess,” straightforward to learn but challenging to master. Each game piece has its own unique movement and attack style, requiring strategic positioning and tactical gameplay to secure victory.
The Objective: Spill the Most Blood
The primary goal of the game is straightforward—cause the most damage and spill the most blood to win. Players engage in up to three rounds of combat, with opportunities to upgrade their forces at the end of each round using Arsenal Points. The Doom Slayer can access more potent weapons, while the hellish forces can summon larger and more lethal units. After three rounds, the side that has caused the most carnage is declared the winner.
Once the funding is secured, the writing and design phase will continue until March of the following year, with manufacturing slated to begin in June. The team anticipates that physical fulfillment of the game will occur by October. The campaign also addresses concerns about shipping and tariffs, providing a detailed estimate of these costs and stating that they have accounted for import duties for U.S. customers, ensuring that the prices displayed are the final amounts to be paid. They also note that they will handle the import and domestic fulfillment within the U.S., ensuring no additional tariffs or duties on top of the pledged amount. However, they currently do not ship to several countries including Russia, Belarus, Central and South America, and certain conflict zones such as Iran, Ukraine, Israel, and Sudan, although this could change depending on future global circumstances.
Given the swift progress towards the funding goal, the campaign is optimistic about reaching its target imminently. Stretch goals include enhancements to the quality of the cards and box, as well as alternate designs for the miniatures of both Doom and The Dark Age versions.
For those eager to dive into a Doom board game experience sooner, there’s already a version available from Fantasy Flight Games, based on the Doom 2016 video game release.
