We Visited Disney World's Pirates of the Caribbean-Themed Beak and Barrel Tavern and Here's What We Thought

Upon stepping into The Beak and Barrel, one is immediately transported into a realm reminiscent of the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. This venue shares the immersive allure of the Haunted Mansion Parlor found on the Disney Treasure and the upcoming Disney Destiny, making visitors feel as though they are part of the attraction itself.

Embark on a Swashbuckling Adventure

Every corner of The Beak and Barrel is filled with intricate details that will delight fans of both the Pirates of the Caribbean rides and the movie series. Keep your eyes peeled for numerous hidden references, nostalgic callbacks, and authentic props once belonging to the cinematic world. Although Jack Sparrow is notably absent from the tavern—owing to his debts with the establishment’s owner—he makes a cameo appearance in one of the four Captains’ Booths through intricately carved wooden panels that narrate legendary pirate tales.

The tavern is owned by Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, who has left her trusty first mate, an Audio-Animatronic parrot named Rummy, in charge. Rummy, inspired by the original Barker Bird from the Disneyland and Disney World attractions, intermittently appears above the Cursed Bar to provide context to the unfolding tavern events. During our visit, we witnessed a mesmerizing musical number by Mermaids/Sirens, accompanied by cool-hued lighting effects, with Rummy and the tavern staff urging us to cover our ears against the sirens’ enchanting song.

Rummy frequently exchanges banter with Kat the Black Cat, another favorite character who lounges contentedly above the doorway, adorned with gold hoop earrings. Although Kat is mostly stationary, nestled in her comfy bed, her subtle breathing and occasional tail twitch add a touch of life to her character.

The Cursed Bar itself is an architectural marvel, shaped partly like a skull. Hidden within this skull is an enchanted bottle of rum, a gift from Tia Dalma (portrayed by Naomi Harris in the movies), which is rumored to keep the tavern’s spirits and pirate morale perpetually high, as long as it remains filled. A highlight of our visit was witnessing the temporary disappearance of this rum, which led to a brief bout of chaos among the patrons.

Directly opposite the bar lies The Mess, formerly a dining hall for Spanish soldiers before the pirates claimed ownership. Notable decorations here include a bell gifted by Captain Redd and an anchor repurposed as a chandelier. Adjacent to this is the Captains’ Quarters, the opulent former residence of the Spanish Comandante, now featuring grand artwork and a cozy fireplace adorned with battling ship miniatures.

In a secluded corner of the Captains’ Quarters is a semi-private sitting area where pirates engage in games of skill and luck, complete with warnings for those tempted to cheat. This discreet area offers a quieter atmosphere, ideal for visitors who prefer a more subdued setting away from the main tavern activities.

Culinary Delights and Enchanted Beverages

At The Beak and Barrel, the culinary and beverage offerings are as thematic as the décor. Stephanie Dold, Beverage Director at Walt Disney World, and Bobby Rivera, Chef De Cuisine, shared insights into how their teams infused the pirate narrative into their creations. Dold emphasized the incorporation of spices and ingredients prevalent in the pirates’ sailing routes into the beverages, while Rivera highlighted the use of international flavors that resonate with the tavern’s thematic setting.

Among the standout menu items is the Siren’s Whisper, a captivating blue cocktail adorned with a siren tear, promising eternal youth, and the Kraken’s Catch, a visually striking dish featuring an octopus tentacle accompanied by vibrant Mediterranean flavors.

A Haven for Buccaneers of Every Age

The Beak and Barrel is designed to be a family-friendly venue, where guests of all ages can immerse themselves in the Pirates of the Caribbean theme in a novel and engaging way. The establishment aims to be more than just a visit; it’s an experience meant to offer new discoveries with each return.

As we anticipate the official opening of The Beak and Barrel on August 29, expectations are high for this to become a beloved destination. With a time limit of 45 minutes per visit, the team hopes to accommodate as many guests as possible.

In conclusion, The Beak and Barrel stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of immersive storytelling through themed entertainment, promising a treasure trove of adventures for pirate enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
