Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Performance Patch Makes Drastic Changes to Enemies and Story, and Players Aren't Happy

Last month, Leenzee Games, the creators of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, assured players that they would swiftly address several performance and optimization problems that had been affecting the game since its release. The recent update, patch 1.5, appears to have resolved many of these issues. However, it also introduced extensive modifications to the game’s enemies, dialogue, and narrative, leaving fans more dissatisfied than before.

Overview of Patch 1.5

At first glance, the release notes for patch 1.5 seem harmless. They include bug fixes and several positive enhancements, such as faster healing animations and the ability to cancel dodge actions during recovery. Additionally, the patch notes mention an optimization intended to enable players to respawn closer to bosses after dying—a change that players are looking forward to.

Unexpected Changes in the Patch

However, buried within the extensive patch notes are a few peculiar entries:
– New dialogues have been added for certain NPCs to flesh out the storylines. Future updates will optimize exhaustion animations to enhance narrative delivery.
– A bug related to faction alignment in Chapter 4 has been corrected, the level design tweaked, and the performance effect of BVB enhanced.
– New voice lines for ‘Wuchang’ have been introduced along with additional NPC dialogues.

Significant Gameplay and Story Adjustments

As highlighted by Lance McDonald on Twitter/X, these updates have significantly altered the behavior of certain NPCs, bosses, and enemies, making them canonically immortal. Notably, a historically significant character no longer dies but instead escapes, leading to a “happily ever after” scenario. Additionally, players can no longer target innocent farmer NPCs, which previously impacted the character’s “madness” mechanic—creating a unique gameplay experience that has now been removed.

Consequently, Chapter 4 of the game, previously known for its chaos and difficulty due to numerous human enemies, has become significantly easier. Many of these enemies are now non-hostile, transforming a challenging chapter into something much more manageable.

Moreover, multiple difficult bosses now do not “die” upon defeat. Instead, they simply stand there exhausted, flee, or declare the intense combat to have been merely a “trial.”

Impact on Game’s Narrative and Player Reception

These changes do not just affect gameplay but also significantly alter the game’s narrative. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, set in the 1600s during the final years of the Ming Dynasty in China, uses the theme of death and the acceptance of life’s end as central motifs. By making characters immortal, the game contradicts its own message about the inevitability of death.

This shift has led to a plethora of negative reviews on Steam and discussions across various social media platforms, with accusations that Leenzee Games is self-censoring due to pressure from some players unhappy with how the Ming characters were portrayed.

One Steam review from a player with substantial playtime expressed disappointment, noting that changing the story post-release not only alters the narrative but also renders some character motivations meaningless. This player, like many others, has chosen to pause their engagement with the game, hoping for a reversion to the original plot or at least an option to return to patch 1.4.

Interestingly, while criticism seems absent on the r/wuchanggame subreddit, there are claims from users of other forums that moderators are removing any negative feedback regarding these updates.

These sweeping changes introduced by patch 1.5 have sparked a significant backlash, highlighting the delicate balance developers must maintain between improving game performance and preserving the integrity of the game’s story and player experience.
