Rod Fergusson, a seasoned executive known for his work on the Diablo and Gears of War series, has announced his departure from Blizzard Entertainment.

Fergusson shared his departure from the company on his personal Twitter/X account:

“After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four significant launches, it’s time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what’s next,” Fergusson wrote. “The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together and looking forward to what comes next for Diablo, and for me.”

Blizzard president Johanna Faries responded on Twitter/X, saying:

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, also commented on BlueSky: “You brought strength, hellfire, and vision to one of gaming’s most iconic franchises. Playing Diablo IV with you was a blast—thanks for everything you gave to the game and the community.”

Rod Fergusson joined Blizzard in 2020 after his tenure at Microsoft’s The Coalition. He had previously been involved in every installment of the Gears of War series during his time at both Microsoft and Epic Games. At Blizzard, Fergusson led the Diablo series, coming on board shortly after Diablo 4 was initially announced. He has been vocal in interviews about his strategic vision for the future of the Diablo series. In April, Blizzard released a roadmap for Diablo 4 for 2025, which was met with mixed reactions from the community. The most recent update for Diablo 4 included the Sins of the Horadrim update featuring new Nightmare Dungeon enhancements and customizable spells.
