Advancing the Gears of War Film Under David Leitch’s Direction
The Gears of War movie, directed by David Leitch of John Wick and Deadpool 2 fame, is making significant progress, as reported by producer Kelly McCormick. With the upcoming release of a new game, Gears of War: E-Day, slated for 2026, there’s palpable excitement and momentum surrounding the film’s production.
However, McCormick clarified in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the Gears of War movie, set to debut on Netflix, won’t be released in sync with the game’s launch in 2026. “We won’t meet that release date, but we aim to have something that ties in with the game’s launch,” she explained.
Production Insights and Future Projects
McCormick and Leitch, who are spouses, co-manage their production outfit, 87North. McCormick expressed Leitch’s enthusiasm for the Gears of War project, noting its blend of war and science fiction elements—genres Leitch has yet to explore in his directorial career. “It’s an opportunity for him to craft something unique in his style,” she added.
Leitch, originally a stuntman who doubled for Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Ocean’s Eleven, co-directed the 2014 film John Wick with Chad Stahelski, though he wasn’t credited due to industry regulations. His directing credits have since expanded to include films like Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy.

Meanwhile, Stahelski is engaged in projects adapting the video games Ghost of Tsushima and Rainbow Six into films.
The latest script for the Gears of War movie is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Prometheus, Doctor Strange, Passengers, and the Dune series.
Details on the Gears of War film are still under wraps, but the game’s official social media responded to news of the interview with excitement, indicating strong support for the adaptation.
Despite the buzz, the Gears of War film is not expected to be Leitch’s immediate next release. He is currently prepping for Amazon MGM Studio’s 2026 heist thriller How to Rob a Bank, starring Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai.
Casting Speculations and Franchise Developments
Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has been vocal about his interest in playing the character Marcus, noting his physical resemblance to the role, though no official casting has been announced. Contrarily, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski has openly opposed casting Chris Pratt in the film.
Having been exclusive to Xbox for nearly two decades, the Gears of War franchise is set to broaden its reach with the release of Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26, available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
