WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD: This interview reveals details about “Superman,” currently showing in cinemas.
The choice of Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen in the new “Superman” film has been met with widespread approval among fans.
At 28 years old, Gisondo, recognized for roles in “The Righteous Gemstones,” “Licorice Pizza,” and “Vacation,” portrays the spirited, red-haired reporter from Daily Planet and companion to Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) in James Gunn’s cinematic take on the superhero. Long before Gisondo was officially cast, his potential as Jimmy had already sparked discussions among comic book enthusiasts online.
“A year before my audition, I began receiving texts and seeing online forum posts from friends saying, ‘Skyler Gisondo would be the perfect Jimmy,’” Gisondo shared with The Bangin Beats on the night before the movie’s premiere. “It was a new experience for me, realizing that people were actually following my career to that extent.”
The actor, who has been in the industry since childhood, was surprised by the fan support, noting, “You learn not to get too excited about potential roles. At first, I even joked that it might just be my mom and grandma hyping me up online,” he said with a laugh.
“It’s been quite moving,” he continued. “I’ve been reflecting more on the last decade of my work in these few months than ever before. Hearing people say, ‘I’ve been rooting for you and waiting for you to land a role like this,’ almost brought me to tears.”
A delightful nugget from Gisondo’s past resurfaced amidst the buzz of his casting in “Superman”—a promposal video he shot on the set of “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” with the help of Ben Stiller and Robin Williams. He was a high school senior at the time. “They brought in the cinematographer and set up professional lighting. The entire crew watched as Ben and Robin turned my simple script into a three-minute show of their comedic genius,” he recalled. “Afterward, I told my mom it was the greatest moment of my life. Ben even arranged a limousine for my prom night,” Gisondo added.
Gisondo also wrapped up his role as Gideon in the comedy series “The Righteous Gemstones” during his time filming “Superman,” praising series creator and star Danny McBride for making it possible to juggle both projects. “Not many showrunners would go out of their way to accommodate such a scheduling conflict,” he remarked.

What significance did the character of Jimmy Olsen hold for you prior to being cast?
“I wasn’t deeply into comic books growing up, but I was a big fan of James Gunn’s work and knew he was directing the film. Had I been more of a comic enthusiast, I probably would have been too nervous during the audition from understanding the full weight of the responsibility,” Gisondo admitted. “Once I was cast, I initially thought about studying all the former portrayals of Jimmy Olsen, but quickly realized that might overwhelm me. I decided it was best to stay present and bring my own interpretation to the role,” he explained, adding that Gunn encouraged this approach right from the start, assuring him, “You’re Jimmy now, whatever you bring to him.”
How did you personally relate to Jimmy Olsen?
“Reading the script felt like a rare alignment of character and personal voice,” Gisondo expressed. “The way James wrote Jimmy—it was as if he was speaking through me. I’m incredibly lucky for this alignment and to work with such a renowned filmmaker on this film, portraying a character I deeply resonate with.”
What did James Gunn convey about his vision for Jimmy Olsen?
“Our very first shoot was for promotional content, and it was quite an experience seeing everyone in their iconic superhero poses while I just stood there in jeans,” Gisondo chuckled. “Jimmy is essentially just a regular guy trying to do his job amidst a world of superheroes and meta-humans. James’s script brilliantly balances the drama in the newsroom with the external superhero conflicts. He told me, ‘Jimmy’s just a normal guy, yet inexplicably, women seem drawn to him.’ That concept was hilarious to me and became the foundation for how I played him—aiming to be the most unremarkable yet somehow intriguing Jimmy Olsen,” he explained.
Does Jimmy meet these women through dating apps or in real life?
“I don’t think Jimmy uses dating apps. It’s more real-life interactions for him. Imagine him standing in line at a coffee shop, and the woman ahead buys his coffee and asks for his number. It seems his appeal follows him everywhere, often to his annoyance, as it distracts from his work. I’ve wondered about dating apps in Metropolis, but never asked James. I should,” Gisondo laughed.
It’d be interesting to see that explored in a sequel.
“I’d be curious about what Jimmy’s DMs look like. Are they filled with hundreds of messages?” he mused.
Have you looked into past portrayals of Jimmy Olsen since completing the film?
“Not yet. I hope this role marks the start of an exciting journey, and I want to focus on bringing my own interpretation without being influenced by previous versions. Once this chapter of my career concludes, I’ll enjoy looking back at how others approached the character. But for now, I want to keep my portrayal as instinctual and unfiltered as possible,” Gisondo stated.
What aspects of Jimmy Olsen are you eager to explore further?
“I’d love to delve deeper into Jimmy’s fieldwork and see him actively using his peculiar charm. His journalistic integrity is paramount, and I’d like to see how he navigates complex stories without compromising his ethics. Additionally, it’d be fascinating to explore his romantic interests and see him genuinely connect with someone. There’s also potential for comedic scenarios if Jimmy were to gain superpowers. Mainly, I’m excited to see him in high-stakes situations that challenge his reporting skills,” he elaborated.
Do you know if Jimmy will appear in other DC Studios projects?
“That’s up to the studio heads, but I’m hopeful. Playing Jimmy has been an incredible gift, and I’d be thrilled to continue this role for many more years,” Gisondo concluded.
