Tomb Raider TV Series Reportedly "Dead"

It appears that the anticipated Tomb Raider TV series being developed for Prime Video by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag, has been shelved. Sources have informed Daily Mail that the project faced delays in script development and the scripts were not yet suitable for production.

Search for Lara Croft and Series Development Issues

Sophie Turner, celebrated for her role in Game of Thrones, was reportedly the leading candidate for the role of Lara Croft. However, with the series’ uncertain future, her involvement is now in doubt. Prime Video has chosen not to make any statements concerning these developments as reported by Daily Mail.

The decision to greenlight the Tomb Raider series was made under the supervision of Jennifer Salke, the former head of Amazon MGM Studios. Salke, who had a personal hand in overseeing the project, has since left the company following rumored internal conflicts. With her departure, the future of the Tomb Raider series appears bleak.

Financial and Creative Challenges

According to Matthew Belloni of Puck, the series encountered numerous challenges, including changes in the writing team and significant financial investments reaching into the tens of millions for its development phase. Despite these efforts, the project struggled to reach the production stage.

Salke had previously expressed high hopes for the series, claiming it could become a significant franchise for Amazon. She praised Waller-Bridge as the ideal leader for the project. Waller-Bridge herself was optimistic about the series, suggesting that her prior experiences, including her roles in the James Bond film ‘No Time To Die’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ had prepared her well for this endeavor.

Other Tomb Raider and Amazon Projects

Despite the setbacks with the TV series, Amazon remains involved with the Tomb Raider franchise, as Crystal Dynamics continues to develop the next video game installment, which was not intended to be linked with the TV series.

The potential cancellation of the Tomb Raider series is part of broader changes at Prime Video. Recently, it has been confirmed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the upcoming James Bond movie under Amazon, following the company’s acquisition of rights from longtime franchise leaders Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
