During the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, one of the most unexpected announcements was the exclusive unveiling of FromSoftware’s new title, The Duskbloods. This game, which combines elements of both PvP (Player vs. Player) and PvE (Player vs. Environment), marks a fresh venture for the creators known for the Soulsborne series. Despite this new direction, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has clarified that this does not indicate a permanent shift in the company’s focus.
Miyazaki recently shared insights with Nintendo about choosing to design The Duskbloods as a PvPvE game. He finds the format intriguing because it offers a wide canvas for creative game-design and also plays to FromSoftware’s strengths in crafting tough enemy challenges.
Miyazaki emphasized, “I’d like to make one thing clear, though we’ve mentioned before that this game is fundamentally an online multiplayer title, it does not mean FromSoftware is transitioning to a multiplayer-centric approach for all future projects.”
He further stated, “We also revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 variant of Elden Ring along with our ongoing commitment to develop games focused on single-player experiences that adhere to our traditional style.”
Since launching Elden Ring in early 2022, FromSoftware has been exploring various new concepts. The game’s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, introduced novel power scaling features through Scadutree Blessings. Additionally, the upcoming Elden Ring: Nightreign, a cooperative survival action game, incorporates classic Souls elements with new dynamics like storms, loot, and player roles. The studio even revisited its roots with the release of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.
Thus, The Duskbloods represents yet another experimental step by FromSoftware. In the discussion, Miyazaki acknowledged that when initially pitched to Nintendo, the concept for The Duskbloods was quite rudimentary—more a collection of preliminary thoughts than a formal proposal, and quite distinct from their previous undertakings.
Despite the new direction with The Duskbloods, it seems that FromSoftware is not completely abandoning the familiar gameplay style they are known for. Essentially, they are still committed to their traditional game development ethos.

Regarding the future, while Miyazaki has indicated that FromSoftware is not currently planning an Elden Ring 2, he has not dismissed the possibility for the future. It also appears unlikely that Bloodborne 2 is in the works, much to the dismay of many fans.
