In yet another tragic incident, defaming the Electronic Dance Music spirit, dozens of concertgoers, many of them minors, were taken to hospitals from the TD Garden Wednesday night suffering mainly from drug and alcohol problems at an Avicii concert. The concert marked the opening of the Swede’s eastern United States tour leg that is scheduled to end in Europe in September. This is now the second Avicii show this year to have witnessed a disturbing instance of alcohol and drug abuse, when back in May, reportedly 29 people were hospitalized with varying degree of health problems.
Boston Emergency Medical Services said at the scene that over 50 people were treated or evaluated at the scene, and 36 other patients were transported to hospitals from the Garden. The staff further assured that there were no fatalities, and all of the patients’ symptoms were minor and treatable. The concert was going fine till about 9 pm, till a string of incidences forced medical emergency services available on the ground to declare a Phase 2 MCI, indicating about 30 people needed to be taken to hospitals. There were numerous ambulances and a Boston EMS emergency trailer, along with Boston police, at the scene within the hour. The audience included people of all ages, and most of the reported victims were identified to be teenagers and youngsters. Authorities are investigating if any forms of drugs were supplied at the venue itself, as a string of erratic behavior, including attendees jumping into the Charles river, aroused their suspicions further. While the crisis is now under control, this is still a developing story, and we wait to hear more from Team Avicii and Boston Management about the incident.
