Slovenian electronica artist Denis Jasarevic, popularly known as Gramatik has shown us time & again that while some genres whose sound may not be most endearing to us or which we consider to have certain limitations towards in terms of its emotive spirits, can be shaped in interesting, fresh, and dynamic ways to create beautiful hybrids of old school and new age music that make for spectacular original tracks. His brand new album, ‘The Age of Reason’ released on his own label Lowtemp is packed with 15 scrupulously crafted, punctilious tracks that are a testament to Gramatik’s seemingly limitless creativity within his ever-expanding niche of electronic music. And the best part….he’s giving it all away for free! Known to be an advocate for free & open internet to share his creations, he joins hands with file-sharing giants BitTorrent to follow his message of ‘freeing music by making music free’.
Perhaps, Gramatik’s most ambitious album to date, ‘The Age Of Reason’ is an amalgamation of samples and live instrumentals so varied it’s like nothing heard ever before from himself, or his fellow producers alike. A master class through each individual track, he harmonizes elements of soul and blues with rock and hip-hop, by way of dubstep and electro and all the way back so much so that it becomes increasingly difficult to stereotype the album to any genre! The album is, in all respects, free and evolves within itself. With a progressive organic sound, the pioneering sound techniques accentuate its ability to seamlessly integrate various genres into one melodic journey leaving behind all sorts of flavours of a seriously tasty delight!
The album tends to find a balance between Gramatik’s first two albums ‘Beats & Pieces, Vol. 1′ and ‘#digitalfreedom’. Where B&P perhaps had a more chill and downtempo musical terrain to it, #df was more aggressive and dubstep oriented. With this album, he finds a sophisticated balance between the two as the album certifies his fortified talent and evolution as an artist without the constraint of boundaries of agents or labels. Diverse sounds on the album make it unpredictable for the listener, each track taking us on a different route on a melodic epic adventure. The album combines many emotions all at once. Warm and snuggy guitar riffs integrated with an aggressive and hard hitting bass-line, smooth and melodic vocals combined with cataclysmic dubstep elements – the album overlaps many shades of conflictions to beautifully moulded productions. Collaborating profusely with Eric Mendelson on the beautiful guitar chains on most of the tracks, Gramatik attempts to make the sound as universally soulful as possible by infusing various live elements into his studio productions. Let’s take short walkthrough this masterpiece compilation!
The album opens with ‘Brave Men’ which has a more chill funk feel to it as it eases us into the album. A trip-hop drumloop transitions us from downtempo into a more attacking dubstep terrain with scorching vocals featuring Eskobars guiding us besides distorting bass-lines.
The second track ‘Torture’ lends a blues feel with crisp guitar riffs, all before a delightful funky beat drops infused with elements of trip-hop and makes it slightly more dance-able than the intro track. A magical collaboration between Eric Krasno & Gramatik!
After that we move to ‘Bluestep’ which was released in February last year alongside the announcement of the album itself. The track fits like a glove as it devises a masterstroke by the employment of pure dubstep elements causing sonic bliss! The track is deeply emotive, despite the varying attacking dubstep elements, as part of the track retains a lot of uplifting harmonics from his previous works.
‘Pardon My French’ starts off with jumpy synths till a high-hitting bass and drum loop introduce the melody in unapologetic fashion. The potent dance music production is somewhat humanized through some smooth guitar riffs. Continuing on the smooth soul & funk feel of the album, synergy between the electronic sounds with the guitar makes it perfect!
‘We Used To Dream’ is perhaps the most soulful & melodic track on the album. Featuring Exmag & Gibbz, with its moody and melancholic vocal work and atmospherics, the track becomes a symphony of sounds which is amplified by the piano keys besides the R&B drum loop.
Next up is ‘You don’t understand’ which begins with a warm piano solo along with pinching guitar riffs till a drum breakdown changes the tempo on the track. Scorching vocal work followed by heavy bass distorting dubstep elements makes the track a hotpot of production perfection!
From there we move onto ‘Obviously’ featuring Cherub & Exmag which immediately has a guitar riff combined with pugnacious beats and wobbling bass work. Almost a modern R&B feel with the fiery guitar jams infused into the heavy bass electronica. Once again, just like the other tracks on the album, the guitar riffs & vocals tie various layers of the song together.
Next on this journey was ‘Control Room Before You’ which once again combines elements of blues with dubstep. Denis combines with ILLUMNTR, to give a concocted mixture of warm intense sounds with energetic and destructive dubstep sounds along with the caressing and insisting vocals fused with trip-hop elements.
Thereafter, ‘Prime Time’ is a more soul-infused dance track that will make you groove and shake at the same time! Electronic puckering synths work with a melodic guitar riff once again amalgamates the live instruments poetically with the harsh breakbeat sounds making it another potent dance-floor weapon.
With ‘Get A Grip’, we are introduced to some robotic samples and half-step drum lines, all supported on the back of a soul-funk feel which further lifts the album in its diversity. Soulful renditions on the guitar make the dance beat swerve in excitement as the brilliant vocals by Gibbz make the track a stand alone highlight on the album.
‘Just Jammin NYC’ is dominated by Eric’s rib-piercing guitar riffs and the track packs a punch midway when a solo piano lead drops a trip-hop beat supported by some robotic synth work completely transforming the track with its plethoric use of live and electronica instruments.
Meanwhile, ‘Expect Us’ takes us to familiar ground with a more generic 4 by 4 drum loop carrying a melodic guitar riff but nothing prepares you for the classic 1960’s Italian Swing-House-funk sample to switch tempo and hence infuse a catchy and addictive dance loop that should probably be patented for simply being awesome! We promise that you will be playing the air guitar on this one, wincing your teeth and tapping your feet along furiously!
‘Faraway’ begins with a R&B drumline and with the help of Orlando Napier, remains calm & composed, gradually pushing its synthwork as it moves forward, further raising the the envelope of diversity on this magnificent album.
By the time we arrive to ‘No Turning Back’ a sweet taste of the soul-funk sound has settled in and we’re welcomed by the wobbling synths and trip-hop drum line, as warm guitar plucks delightfully synchronized with the synths and reassuring vocals are assisted by chirpy piano work and teased by eclectic guitar riffs. This track makes the captivating journey almost hypnotic as various elements are married with each other to create a seamless auditory experience.
We end with the cleverly titled ‘It’s Just A Ride’ which signifies the classic Gramatik smooth soundscape that we have fallen in love with. Starting off with humming and mellow guitar chords before a heavier electric guitar riff rips through the track alongside a charade of drum loops, distorting bass blips and chopped up synth work to amalgamate a myriad of experience that we have rushed through in those 15 tracks!
Speaking about the album itself, here’s what Denis had to say,
“[The album was] inspired by a stand-up segment by comedian George Carlin. He made a joke on the fact that he was Catholic until he reached the age of reason. I also firmly believe that there comes a time in a human life when you reach the so-called ‘age of reason’ and realize that there are so many irrational beliefs, shameless contradictions and illogical restrictions inflicted upon society for various malicious reasons, things that were deliberately designed to keep us in line and prevent us from reaching our full potential as a species. Some people reach it sooner, others later, but a majority unfortunately never do. [Through my music] I’d like to guide more people to reach the age of reason sooner. Maybe. Or, hopefully at least unite the ones that feel the same way.”
