Artist Of The Month: Lane 8 (July 2015)
Over the past two years, a name that has consistently and positively emerged from within the Deep House and Progressive sound spectrum is Daniel Goldstein. Better know as Lane 8 to the Dance Music fraternity, Daniel‘s surge in the scene can be accredited to his sudden emergence on Anjunadeep and his penchant for cutting edge production masterclass, whether it be his emotive singles, his innovative remixes or his compilation mixtapes, which have garnered a humbling following over the years. On the cusp of his debut Artist Album ‘Rise‘, we dive into Lane 8‘s influential brand of Deep House as we award him our Artist of The Month for the month of July 2015.
The journey began for Daniel Goldstein when as a child he would hear the music of Pete Rock and DJ Premier, and practice hard on a home-decked drum machine and keyboards. Involved in music making from a young age, perhaps the turning point of his musical consciousness was when he heard Justice at Los Angeles at the peak of their career. Till then, an otherwise hip-hop enthusiast Daniel immersed himself into the world of Electronica. The world first sat up and took notice of the upcoming producer back in 2013 when the iconic ‘Be Mine‘ emerged on airwaves and instantaneously shot him to fame. After that, he was literally on the bookmarks of every music enthusiast awaiting new music from the 8th Lane.
The story behind his name too is albeit an interesting one. In Athletics or swimming, the 8th lane is usually assigned to the slowest or the weakest, leaving them with the tag of ‘underdog’ – someone who is expected to lose in a contest or conflict but still has the same chances of achieving success. Him and his sister thought it would be clever to start a garage band of the same name hence, given his limited resources, however the name signifies a paradoxical story in itself as his music now echoes around the 4 corners of the globe.
Lane 8‘s musical style had been once described as “dreamy-back-rub-house” – a description he himself had found appropriate! In terms of technical precision, the rising superstar is immaculate with his song structure often infusing FX and drum machine alternates to alter the tempo of his tracks. Relying heavily on a bassline-friendly atmosphere, Lane 8’s music also includes emotive breakdowns that make for easy listening as well as peak time deliverance on the Dancefloor. Known to use live and electronic instruments creatively, he came into limelight when it emerged that he used “Bond Dolls“, figurines shaped in likeness of the famous Baseball player Barry Bonds, which stores household ingredients such as table salt, sesame seeds and coriander! He often uses these shakers as musical elements in his productions as well!
As a DJ, Lane 8 has made his presence felt on the Anjunadeep stage, often collaborating with artists on remix duties or warming up the decks for extended DJ sessions. Building his set from a Progressive style towards a more driving Deep House sound, Lane 8‘s musical impetus comes because of his one eye on the keen understanding of a Dancefloor vibe and the other eye always seeking to bring in his own creativity. With his debut upcoming album on July 17, Lane 8 seeks to announce his arrival as a superstar with some mighty collaborations with the likes of Solomon Grey on ‘Diamonds‘ and ‘Hot As You Want‘, and with Patrick Baker on ‘Ghost‘. You can check out the tracks below and pre-order the album now from here.
In an era spawned by limitless creativity, Lane 8 stands out as one of the few performers who ties himself up firmly to Traditional sound without compromising on creatively stimulating sounds, as we enter the last and final lap – where the ‘underdog’ emerges and overtakes the rest.
