Artist Of The Month – Jerome Isma-Ae (July 2013)

Hailing from Munich, Jerome Isma-Ae is one of the highest-selling & most successful producers around and is also the owner of the label “Jee-Productions”. The German producer/DJ is known for his distinguished sound; a rumbling beat with a build up that you recognize the second you hear the first drum sample. Exceptionally talented, he manages to keep his signature sound in all his productions and remixes while still delivering variety.

At the age of 12, he played the bass in a metal band and by the age of 15, he had already started to program his first beats with a drum machine. 3 years later he released his first 12″ record on a German techno label called ‘Delirium Records’. Nowadays, he’s greatly inspired by movie soundtracks among his other influences.

In the past he has said, “It was 1991, when we replaced our bands drummer by a drum machine”. From that year on, dance music and the revolution it has set forth became a never-ending part of Jerome’s everyday life.

The first few years of Jerome’s career were all about exploring the different sides of music. A year after his first release, he teamed up with Marcel Krieg and gave birth to the Future Funk project,  which was the first German act on Strictly Rhythm and brought with itself a successful combination of house, disco, soul and funk. To Jerome, it’s that well balanced blend of styles that makes the ride worthwhile.

Jerome describes his sound by saying, “Hotter than a porn star, stronger than a Lamborghini! My sound has been going through some changes in the last couple of years, but I’ve always kept my signature in productions and remixes, so everyone can hear right away where it’s from”.

Another example of his versatility is his work on movie soundtracks and commercials. Projects for Audi, Marlboro and several other biggies, saw him opening up to the more commercial type of producing. Despite the many projects he’s doing, there’s still not enough time to complete them all. He says, “At the moment there is not even enough time to accept every remix request. I just had to decline a job for a BMW advertisement . I should be an octopus, then I could work on many projects in the same time, or at least I’d be good food”.

His remix of the monstrous, ‘Push The Feeling On’ made it to #1 in the U.S. Billboard Dance Charts in 2002 and reached pole position in the German Dance Charts in 2004. His astonishing remix of ‘Guru Josh Project- Infinity 2008’ was one of that year’s biggest Dance anthems and even made it #1 in the UK Club Chart. The single achieved gold status in Australia and Germany, peaked at #1 on the Dutch and French Singles Chart and reached #3 on the UK Singles Chart.

His inspirational releases such as ‘Rokit ’and ‘Phantom’ have graced a number of prominent labels including Armada Music, Hope Records & Ministry Of Sound. His ‘Underwater Love’ was voted Best Chill Out Track for the Beatport Music Awards 2009. In 2009 alone, he remixed the likes of Faithless, Above & Beyond, Paul van Dyk and Way Out West and even gave Michael Jackson’s, ‘Stranger in Moscow’ his own unique progressive twist. As Jerome has rightly put it, “For the progressive house / trance genre I am like what AMG is to Mercedes, or MTM is to Audi. I just make the original product more sporty, powerful and unique. You can call me a ‘tracktuner’.”

Besides ‘tracktuning’ and producing one dance floor cracker after another, Jerome spent his time well by setting up his own label, Jee Productions. Talking about the imprint he has said, “I just wanted to do my own thing, without any influence from outside. It works pretty good if I find the time to release something on it. The last release was ‘308’, produced by Sebastian Krieg and me. The track is dedicated to the Ferrari 308″.

In 2010, Jerome was named breakthrough artist of the year by the world’s number one DJ, Armin Van Buuren and went on to say, “That was a very proud moment. Gareth Emery, Cosmic Gate, and a few other DJ’s also voted me as breakthrough artist in 2010. It’s a good feeling to know that my music is liked and supported by so many great DJ’s”.

With the launch of his podcast ‘Smile When You Kill Me’, Jerome is on a never ending road of creativity and success. His latest collaboration with Alex M.O.R.P.H has further established his talent by attaining #1 on the Beatport trance top 100 chart.
