Disclosure – Settle (Album Review)

Disclosure - Settle

Much has been spoken of Disclosure, a British duo making waves in the dance music department with their funky sounds and groovy beats. These Surrey brothers namely Guy and Howard Lawrence – have been on a blitzkrieg, to say the least. With their debut album having just released, audiophiles and common people are raving praise for this sibling duo, who by the way, are born in the 90’s. In the past six months or so, Disclosure has had quite a bit of action in the international dance music scene, gaining recognition for a few singles, however, the sky’s the limit for them right now, because their album is nothing short of impressive.

Most of us believe that dance music is highly dynamic. The scene keeps shifting so quickly, suddenly, everything is classified as old-school/retro. That being said, Disclosure have played it quite simple yet smart. One wouldn’t classify their music as old-school, but it is safe to say that they have combined various elements from a different generation of music. This album maintains the balance between the UK garage act, something this duo grew up listening to, yet, manages to provide the right tempo to rave with, thanks to a talented lot of featured artists too. 2 days back this album hit the #1 spot on the UK iTunes charts within 12 hours, no doubt a huge release in their home country, despite it being made available for streaming a week before. The ace up Disclosure’s sleeve is that they never get too monotonous. Each track is unique, and you are left guessing. One’s predictions are bound to fail, and most of you will end up flabbergasted at the very skill and pizzazz they possess. This is a new light in their career, and they’re off to a colorful start.

Check out our track by track take.

1. Intro

This is more of an Intro to another song in the album namely ‘When A Fire Starts to Burn’.  It’s a vocal sample lasting around a minute, coupled with some funky drum rhythms.

2. When A Fire Starts To Burn

A sure-fire banger, this song is less of a pop track, and puts us into a heavy dance funk. The video is as weird as it gets, but we like weird. With unusual lyrics, but an addictive beat, we’re left dancing the night away.

3. Latch ft Sam Smith

Arguably one of our favourite tracks on this album, this tune left us speechless. Much of the credit does go to Sam Smith for his amazing vocals which engulf our mood. But don’t leave Disclosure behind, their production still remains the finest, and entire justice has been done to this track.

4. F For You

Premiered as a part of live session at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios, this track blends sick electro pop along with some kick ass vocals. That snare drum beat is doing amazing things to this track, absolutely golden.

5. White Noise ft Aluna George

Another track which gained recognition due to the killer voice of Aluna George is White Noise. The beats are translucent and Aluna’s voice sashays into the chorus quite seamlessly.  A club-hit, for certain.

6. Defeated No More ft Ed Macfarlane

Albeit their longest song of the album, this track is super smooth and sensual. It could end up easily giving a fight to any of Disclosure’s acclaimed popular tracks. Ed Macfarlane croons a wonderful melody and Disclosure once again excels at what they do best. This track craves affection, and we’ve warmed up to it.

7. Stimulation

More of a sample, this short track is more of an upbeat drum rhythm with a menacing bass pounding in the background. Speaks quite highly of Disclosure’s talent with percussion instruments.

8. Voices ft Sasha Keable

Taking the reins from Stimulation, the voice of Sasha Keable is infectious. With Disclosure injecting some futuristic sounds, yet sticking to their roots, this track mellows you down.

9. Second Chance

So, Disclosure conducts a rather unusual experiment with this track. They sample Kelis’ “Get Along With You” and turn it upside down, mixing in some fantastic loops, completely transforming the original track. Makes for an interesting listen.

10. Grab Her!

Another inspired sample, this one lifted from a J. Dilla track, is used on “Grab Her!,” although Disclosure is less tethered to its vocal edit here than it is on the preceding track. Instead, the song is pushed forward with hollow beats bouncing everywhere and all in all, forming quite a remarkable sound.

11. You and Me Ft Eliza Doolittle

There is something hauntingly beautiful about Eliza Doolittle’s voice, and Disclosure does nothing but good things with this tune, welding in some progressive drum loops. One of our favorites.

12. January ft Jamie Woon

Jamie Woon has an amazing voice, period. Very 90’s club like, this track is set slightly differently from Disclosure’s usual sound, with a hint of minimal tunes.

13. Confess to me ft Jessie Ware

A few months after gaining fame for their remix of Jessie Ware’s “Running”, Disclosure once again enlists the services of Jessie’s vocals and locks her in a cage of techno beats. Jessie’s vocals are the highlight of this track.

14. Help Me Lose My Mind ft London Grammar

While some tracks are upbeat and pacey, Disclosure know how to take it down a notch. Neatly placed and this song’s elements fit perfectly where Disclosure have placed them.  A fitting end to a solid album, it is a significant pleasurable journey.
