Generation Wild Tour stops in Bijou, Boston

Given the lineup of this tour and the research we did before their stop in Boston, we expected this to be one wild night. With DJ/producers representing four countries that are well known for their EDM influence and following, the night turned out to be exactly as anticipated. 4 really talented DJ/producers on the road in the bus below, you can only imagine the amount of fun they had.

We got to spend some time with each of these artists to get an idea of what lies ahead for them in 2013. Stay tuned and we will be posting the exclusive interviews very soon.

After the interviewing session was done, we took a ride with dBerrie to the venue as he was up to play at 11 pm. Unfortunately, due to interviewing everybody we couldn’t make it to Mikael Weermets’ set but caught the tail end of it which seemed to be a mashup of ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ where my trainspotting skills failed me and I couldn’t ID it. Weermets is known for not being bogged down by genres. The last ten minutes of his set went through tech house, electro and ended with a few minutes of dubstep. After this he proceeded to hand over the decks to dBerrie who had been patiently waiting to unleash on the crowd. Mikael Weermets may have left the decks, but his role in the night was far from over. At multiple occasions he could be seen launching glow sticks into the crowd, spraying smoke and pumping every body up.

This being the first time I had seen any of these DJs, I was ready to experience and absorb the live skills they had to offer. dBerrie is a performer with a wide range of live experience. His set comprised of mostly progressive and electro house tracks. One of which was his very own Zenithwhich is all set to release on Flamingo Recordings. You can tell by the way he performs that David is very comfortable with where he is.

Playing with some of the biggest names in the business, this New Yorker knows exactly how to set a room on fire. Most of the patrons were still at the bars and the floor was fairly empty.

But as his set progressed and the alcohol flowed, the center of the club and front of the console became more and more crowded with the crowd raging to the beats. Next up was the 17 yearl old man of the hour, Danny Avila.

Danny Avila

Danny Avila

Danny Avila, who according to us may have had the best set all night, proved his age and lack of experience doesn’t even come close to slowing him down. With what seemed like a 70 minute mini-mix, the 17 year old moved through genres like he was switching lanes on a high speed highway. Jumping seamlessly between electro, progressive, trap and dubstep, this young dj was like a magician on the stage. The crowd warmed up pretty good during dBerries set but it was really during Avila’s set where the crowd started losing it.

There were multiple moments that amazed us and really displayed the mixing skills to justify the reaction this new comer has brought. Playing age old tracks from before his time like Numb and mashing it up with Blood Rush and then moving it into Cannonball, Avila seemed to be 4 tracks ahead of  the one that was currently playing.

When asked about his upcoming releases, he replied saying “you may or may not hear some tonight, but the rest is a secret.” Just at the end of 2012, Danny dropped ‘Breaking your fall’ which is pretty much the track that really helped bring him to the big league. With its beautiful synths and high tempo drums the track made it very obvious that this kid was about to have a huge year ahead.

Deniz Koyu stepped up after Avila to end the night. The man we first noticed after MTV Clubland named him the ‘Artist to watch in 2012′, he has since delivered banger after banger with the likes of Follow You, Bong and of course Rage. The USA team of The Bangin Beats was very excited to see Deniz in action. The India team had the opportunity to see him live and interview in Mumbai and after hearing about their experience, there was no chance we were missing out on this. In a chat with him before the set he said “the energy was so fresh and unseen”. He mentioned the vibe he felt was that of fans who wouldn’t care if it was a big name producer or not, it seemed completely unbiased.

Deniz is a humble and soft spoken guy, but behind the decks he is absolutely ruthless. His track selection is tailored for big room mania and he shifted an already manic crowd into overdrive. Ten minutes into his set, the VIP tables had moved closer to the floor with their bottles and the hostesses were having a hard time keeping up with the overcrowded floor. This is when the tours famous champagne facials came out. The front row was getting doused with champagne and the glow sticks were flying. With a smile on his face and a fist pumping high up after every drop, Koyu proceeded to bring out some pretty innovative mash-ups and transitions.

The energy behind the console was on another level, with dBerrie, Avila and Weermets all standing besides Koyu raging as hard as we were. Seeing these four artists standing together felt like a defining moment in the future of EDM. Here is when we could tell how appropriately this tour had been named. Any pictures, videos, reviews you look at from this tour will prove to you exactly what we are talking about. The entire set just poured out the sound and energy of today’s artists and fans.

Absolute futuristic sets from all four clearly show us what the future of EDM holds. Having clearly defined genres may be good to segregate and recognize certain sounds, but really when delivered in the manner that these guys did, it may not mean much in the coming years.
