Could Spotify Be Coming To India?

The music streaming business is at an all time high across the world right now. As a number of players continue bringing something new on the table, music listeners these days have more music on their hands than they can consume. With services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play Music being the big players in the market right now, the time couldn’t have been better for them to expand.

Taking these services in context to India, and it paints a different picture. Apple Music has been available in the country from 2015, while Google Music Play was just launched in April, in addition to our very own services, including Saavn, Gaana, Hungama, Wynk among others. In the midst of these, Spotify is the only big player which is not available in India. But all that could be set to change in the coming future. According to TechCrunch, Spotify is looking to expand further in Asia, with plans of launching the music streaming service in Vietnam and Thailand, and India is the next obvious destination for the music streaming giant. India, with its huge consumer market, could be a smart business decision for Spotify as it is seriously considering the possibility of joining a U.S. stock market without holding an IPO.

While all of this is still speculation, the launch of Spotify in India would indeed be a shot in the arm of music streaming in the country, and will provide some much needed competition to the already existing players in the same space, and it’s not a question of if, but when. Till then, all we can do is wait and watch.
