Interview With Edward Maya!

Romanian producer/DJ Edward Maya is the undeniable protagonist of a major success story. Ever since he exploded onto the international electronic music landscape in 2009 with his magical hit ‘Stereo Love‘, the enigmatic talent has gone onto become one of industry’s finest creations. Hailing from Eastern Europe, the artiste has seen a growth in his stature over the years having crafted number of spellbinding originals and remixes and setting himself as a class apart in every way. Making a much anticipated return to India, we managed to catch up with Edward to discuss his special connection with the country, new music, inspiration, Bollywood plans and much more!

TBB: Hi Edward, thanks for taking out the time to speak to The Bangin Beats. How’s it going?

Edward: Very well. Thank you.

TBB: You’re returning to India after quite some time. Good to be back?

Edward: There are a lot of reasons for me to happily come back here. Besides the hospitality of the people, their beauty and their spiritual purity, there is also a feeling of being Home. I am fascinated by the great sages of India, and recently I studied the life and teachings of the great yogi SRI RAMAKRISNA. I simply fell in love with INDIA. Now I’m looking forward to perform at the Dublin Square at Phoenix Marketcity, Mumbai on 19th Feb.

TBB:
Your last album was released in 2014. Any more new material coming from you?

Edward: I can say that nothing kept me busy except work on myself and intense study. For me, releasing music is the result of inspiration. I’m not constricted by a schedule because I am not looking for commercial success and I am not fighting for a pole position at the top. For me art and music have a different meaning. As I said, I consider that music has the power to awaken the heart of people and it can help them discover God, that’s why I’ll release more music and follow success only if it meets my spiritual values.

The schedule of the concerts will keep me pretty busy for sometime. We are preparing new videos, photo sessions, conferences and workshops simultaneously.

TBB: You’ve toured India previously. Any special memories from your previous tours?

Edward: My life is full of synchronicities. These are some of the most interesting and pleasant memories that remain etched in my soul,  these are the moments that make me feel that “God gives me Signs”. Last year in India, after a lot of adventures and ticket cancelling, I finally reached the most famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, “Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga” exactly when a special ritual dedicated to SHIVA was taking place on the day of MAHASHIVARATRI. This way I could participate at that event, something I have never done before. Being able to attend the celebrations, felt like a sign.

TBB: You have played all around the world. Which has been your favourite venue/city to play at?

Edward: On the 19th Feb concert, people will hear all the Edward Maya singles released from 2009-2016. Many of them will be performed live and a part will be in the DJ set. Each concert and show represents a “vehicle” in which people will take a spiritual trip to their soul and this trip will be guided by music, lights and visuals.

TBB: Who would you say are your inspirations when it comes to making music?

Edward: I am very happy and grateful to God because I was born in a modest family of artists. My grandfather was a musician and my parents are into painting and restoration. I can say that this environment planted the “seed” that turned into this my vision of Art and Beauty. I strongly believe that through Art, Music and Beauty people can awaken their hearts and discover God. This is also the reason why the release of the new Edward Maya album will be followed by conferences and workshops about “Awakening the Heart Trough Music and Beauty”.

TBB: Any plans to remix or make a Bollywood song in the future?

Edward: I didn’t manage to establish any collaboration for now, but one of my dreams is to compose film music at Bollywood, taking in consideration that my professional specialty is film music composition. With the forthcoming release of my new album, I hope that the world finds the new vibe, the new sound and the new direction of my music. I am certain that collaborations will follow naturally.

TBB: What’s your craziest memory from your tours?

Edward: On this matter I can tell you about a concert in an arena in Mexico when, before performing “Love Story“, I asked all my fans to evoke in the same time the feeling they had the first time they fell in love. The effect was amazing. The mood in the arena was magical in an instant. You could feel in the air that all the people were living a feeling of love and happiness. After that I performed the single “Love Story” and the way the public responded to the single was emotional.

TBB: Do you have any message for your Indian fans?

Edward: I always been fascinated by Indian music and by Indian instruments (Bubul Tarang, Sitar, Tambura), that is why I used them in my music as well (the album Angels). Also, I confess that my mother often watches Indian movies and I became familiar with Indian Bollywood music owing to that. I always look forward to performing in India as the culture and vibe of the people is wonderful.
