We all have our preferences while setting up our playlists to the tunes we love most. Choosing tracks which best fit our mood and exemplify our state of mind at the time, regardless of the artist performing it. One cannot deny the vast divide in choice of artists and musical preferences among the common and avid music listeners. So who would you say is the artist both men and women prefer listening to? Spotify‘s new R & D division The Echo Nest recently conducted a study among music fans to ascertain how artists fared against the divisions of sex, as well as age, amongst each other.

By analyzing the listening behavior of 200,000 anonymous music fans across a variety of services, The Echo Nest director of developer platform Paul Lamere has drawn some interesting conclusions to the behavioral patterns of these fans, in an attempt to help apps and services select more gender-neutral artists when they don’t know whether the listener is male or female. While Bruno Mars gained the overall highest spot between Male and Female listeners, he wasn’t the solo winner for either category. While men put Eminem on the top of their list, Rihanna rules the roost on the women’s list.

In terms of Dance Music appreciation, the list reveals plenty as well. Grammy winning Electronic music pioneers Daft Punk stepped up the plate to number 2 on the men’s list and an uncomfortable 34 on the women’s list. While David Guetta was picked at number 6 on the men’s list and number 17 on the female’s list, Calvin Harris was picked at the number 12 spot on the men’s list and number 39 on the women’s list. Swedish hitmaker Avicii made the men’s list at number 29 but failed to impress the women. Skrillex featured in the survey notoriously as the artist who 13-year-olds will play the most and 64-year-olds will play the least – a reasonable conclusion from the study!
