William Tyler Announces New Album Time Indefinite, Shares New Songs: Listen

Guitarist William Tyler, based in Nashville, has revealed his upcoming album, Time Indefinite, set for release on April 25 through Psychic Hotline. Alongside this announcement, Tyler has shared the first three tracks of the album, grouped into a suite: “Cabin Six,” “Concern,” and “Star of Hope.” Accompanying each song is a short film created from home videos of Tyler’s family. You can watch these below, and find the tracklist and cover art further down.

The track “Cabin Six” incorporates samples from an old tape recorder that Tyler discovered in 2020 while sorting through his late grandfather’s office in Jackson, Mississippi. He transported the recorder back to Nashville, where he and producer Jake Davis repurposed it to generate tape loops that feature in this opening track.

The song “Star of Hope” originated from an a capella hymn Tyler encountered on AM radio. Tyler expressed his fascination with the unexpected origins of what he calls ‘sacred melodies,’ citing as an example how the melody of “The Star-Spangled Banner” came from an old English drinking tune.

Time Indefinite marks Tyler’s first solo project since his 2019 album Goes West. During the intervening years, he has been involved in collaborative projects, including works with the Impossible Truth and Marisa Anderson, and he composed the score for Kelly Reichardt’s 2019 film, First Cow.
