Walton Goggins is set to return as the beloved character The Ghoul from the Fallout TV series in the game Fallout 76.
In the free Burning Springs expansion coming this December, The Ghoul will be featured in Fallout 76, bearing both the appearance and voice of Goggins. This expansion extends the Fallout 76 map into Ohio, located west of the Appalachian region—a fictionalized area representing West Virginia and its adjacent locales—which is already present in the game.
Though The Ghoul is not a playable character or a companion, players will find him at ‘The Last Resort’ in the hub area named Highway Town, where he will offer new Bounty Hunting missions. Players can also acquire The Ghoul’s firearm, as seen in the TV show, as part of their rewards.

“Everyone watched Season 1, right?” Rush mentioned. “We saw how it concluded—with Kyle MacLachlan’s character looking out towards New Vegas, and the Deathclaw skull lying on the ground. Once Season 1 ended, we immediately began brainstorming the content for Season 2. Although we weren’t sure when Season 2 would release, we began early preparations for it and planned updates accordingly.”
“Our vision for the new region was to evoke the familiar elements of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. We instructed our team to focus on three main aspects: deserts, Deathclaws, and raiders. These elements capture the atmosphere, essence, and peril of those games, which we aimed to reflect in our map expansion for Burning Springs,” Rush explained.
Rush continued, explaining that as they fleshed out the setting and the bounty hunting system, The Ghoul naturally became part of the narrative.
“Here’s the essence of the new area: desert, Deathclaws, and raiders. And what better feature to highlight this new region than bounty hunting? In such a harsh environment, you’ll find plenty of dubious characters to pursue. Introducing a bounty hunting system seemed like a perfect addition for our players, offering them something exciting to engage with. We had been considering this feature for some time and were waiting for the right moment to implement it,” he added.
“And who better to run the bounty hunting than The Ghoul? Not just any ghoul, but The Ghoul from the TV series. Walton Goggins, a huge fan of the franchise and the games, embraced the role quickly. Our team worked on the script while their side handled the dialogue, and it all came together seamlessly when Walton transformed the script into something uniquely his own. It was quite remarkable to witness his transition into The Ghoul,” he stated.
The arrival of The Ghoul in Fallout 76 is expected to attract a surge of new players, especially with the premiere of Fallout Season 2 on December 17, 2025. The timing of the Burning Springs expansion and The Ghoul’s debut in early December aligns perfectly with the show’s growing popularity.
A key question arises: how does The Ghoul fit into the Fallout 76 timeline? It is important to note that the TV show is set in 2296, after all the Fallout video games. Fallout 4 is set in 2287, and Fallout: New Vegas in 2281, which is 15 years prior to the TV series. Meanwhile, Fallout 76 starts in 2102, on October 23, known as Reclamation Day, making it the earliest game in the series, occurring 25 years post the Great War of 2077 that devastated the planet.
From Season 1 of the TV series, we learned that The Ghoul, originally Cooper Howard, survived over 200 years following his transformation due to a nuclear blast in 1955. Since Fallout 76 is canonical, it confirms that The Ghoul was active in Ohio during the game’s timeline.
When asked if Burning Springs would contribute new insights to the Fallout universe canon, Rush responded affirmatively: “Absolutely. We’ve never explored this part of the map before, so even just adding a segment of Ohio influences the overall lore of Fallout.”
LaCoste added, “As many fans might be aware, Ohio is seldom mentioned throughout Fallout, so it’s exciting to be able to establish some foundational lore for this new area.”
The announcement of Goggins’ involvement in Fallout 76 follows closely on the heels of his reaction to Pete Davidson’s prediction that fans might turn on him as they did with Pedro Pascal. Goggins boldly stated, “If this is my fate… Well… I’m going to enjoy the heck out of it.”
