Flashback: Eric Prydz – Proper Education

Proper_educationcd2

Admit it, there are certain tracks that you can’t convince yourself to delete from your iTunes, or from back when this track was released, Winamp. My old 80GB iPod Classic is one such treasure trove of tunes, and putting the songs on shuffle can bring up many a good memory.

‘Proper Education’ was an instant hit when it came out back in 2007. King Prydz’s twist to the original “Another Brick In The Wall, Part II”  by classic rock virtuoso group Pink Floyd struck a chord among all the mavericks, the believers of counter culture, and people who loved quality house music in general. Coupled with the amazing track was an equally amazing video with crazy parkour stunts from teenagers making jumping from one building to another seem like a cakewalk! Violating privacies to tap into the issue of energy efficiency, reeking of positive rebellion, seemed to be the striking chord that made the video so popular with the young and the restless and ended with the message “You Don’t Need An Education To Save The Planet”..

The track was a powerful one, not just in impact but also in terms of the bassline. It reached number two in the UK charts and number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart in the US. The track was also nominated for Best Mixed Recording at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Of course, as we have come to expect of the Swedish maestro, the track had some dreamy synth inputs and the usual ‘purist’ approach to a track.

That’s the thing with remixing legendary tracks- they’re so well known that it’s a huge task for the artist to make the remix palpable to the listeners. Surprisingly (or not), ‘Proper Education’ did the job for me (and I literally grew up listening to Floyd) and I’m sure the majority would agree on that. In fact, it still gives the same vibe it did back in ’07. Listen away folks, this tune is bereft of the boredom that comes with even the best of them.

Lazy Rich – Brainfreeze (Original Mix)

“Brainfreeze” is the first rocket of Lazy Rich‘s stable to be launched via Doorn Records, led by Dutchman Sander Van Doorn. Featuring the kind of chord progressions which the Doorn Records label is now synonymous with, Brainfreeze hits you in the face with a crunchy, hard hitting bassline that is sure to please.

The track growls to life with a elegant progressive riff which seems to be reminiscent of Sander Van Doorn’s own sound, making it is easy to see how the track finds it’s home on Doorn’s imprint. As progressive chords soar and the track begins charging forward, a solid bass driven beat climbs towards a thundering electro wasteland.

Lazy Rich lures his listeners in before hitting them with a paralyzing blast, with a war cry of “Brainfreeze” and as a result one hell of an electro banger is born. Definitely one track which I would want to hear live. The track is one of the best electro house releases of the year yet.

Fehrplay – Phantom (Unreleased)

Most artists on the Pryda Friends label are stalwarts! Of course, when artists from that camp deliver tight tunes regularly, you know King Prydz is sprinkling them with some sort of Holy Water!

Phantom is an unreleased genius from electronic virtuoso Fehrplay which has caused quite a stir after being featured on Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Radio on friday. ABGT, which was commenced in Bangalore, features some killer tunes and Phantom is no exception. Packed with fluid, smooth and uplifting melodies coupled with a hard hitting bassline, Phantom is a track that we at the Bangin HQ are eagerly waiting to get our hands on. Listen to the track and judge for yourself..

Hardwell feat. Amba Shepherd – Apollo

Just when you thought the bar couldn’t be raised any higher, the enlightening Dutch tastemaker and Revealed Recordings front man, Hardwell, delivers a groundbreaking new track, “Apollo,” as follow-up to his critically acclaimed masterpiece, “Spaceman”. “Apollo” exemplifies all of the raw talent that has truly distinguished the World #6 DJ as one of the leading producers of this generation.

With the addition of the angelic vocals of Australia’s Amba Shepherd, Hardwell carries you up through the atmosphere with gorgeous chords. Then after a swift build into a pair of call-to-action snare hits, you’re off on an orbit of your own led by an imaginative progressive lead synth melody with a dense electro bassline backbone. “Apollo” is sure to bombard the charts and club floors alike, sealing yet another home run for the explosive Dutch trailblazer.

In the words of Robbert van de Corput aka Hardwell, “While producing ‘Apollo’, I got goosebumps all over by the exciting melody. I instantly knew that this was going to be the follow up of ‘Spaceman.’  The title ‘Apollo’ refers to the city of Houston where I started the track in my hotel room”.

Hardwell continues his reign over the dance music world and it surely won’t be long until he has the whole EDM universe in his grasp.

Zedd- Spectrum (Shreddie Mercury Remix)

After seeing so many remixes come out for this epic track, we have Shreddie Mercury giving this one a spin with his own take on this amazing track.  He was given this track since he won the remix contest organized by Zedd.

A perfect electro house track, “Spectrum” has been given a whole new meaning by Mr.Mercury. The vocals of Matthew Koma have been kept intact with some thumping beats to support it.

Just released under Interscope Records, this one is a must listen.

Afrojack – Annie’s Theme (Original Mix)

Following the release of his remix of “Hands High”, Afrojack has returned to our speakers with a highly awaited original of his own called “Annie’s Theme” which officially released today on Wall Recordings.

The superb chord progressions and sparks of melodic interlude on the track definitely brings to us the trademark Afrojack style, which is constantly changing but yet, always recognizable.

“It’s a piece of music, it doesn’t need a name” is what Nick Van De Wall said when asked about his new upcoming track that was played on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show.

The track bears resemblance with the classic Afrojack sound that can be found in tracks such as Replica and Selecta and his trademark rough high pitched beeps, whines, and whistles are mashed up flawlessly to create what looks to be, in my opinion, one his best tracks till date!!

“Annie’s Theme” definitely leaves you JACKED!

Italian Duo Crookers to call it quits

The Italian Dj/Production duo Crookers (Phra and Bot), who have been together since 2003 have decided to go separate ways. Just like our beloved Swedish House Mafia, this duo that gave us some huge remixes and productions are taking different creative directions to pursue their solo careers. Phra will continue to work under the Crookers label while Bot will adopt a new alias and along with it maybe a new sound. On their facebook page they released a statement to their fans saying:

“After having worked together for more than 8 years now, the time has arrived to start exploring different directions.” Bot said.

Exciting times are yet to come and both can’t wait to show what’s in store for the future.

“We want to thank all our fans for supporting us from day one!

Don’t be sad though, a new chapter is about to begin.”

They delivered one of the most played remixes of the Kid Cudi hit, “Day N Nite” infusing their fidgety and electro sound to make us all dance during those high school parties at farm houses and such. Here is the remix and some more of their newer #bangin tracks

Ashley Wallbridge – Grenade (Original Mix)

Firing one musical missile after the next, last years DJ Mag #32 Ashley Wallbridge continues to hit the targets right where they should be struck.

Following the success of his debut album ‘The Inner Me’, which shot in to the Top 15 iTunes Dance chart around the world, he  brings out his new single, a weapon, kicking in by the name of ‘Grenade’.

Buckle up, cause this one’s going to kick in hard. A real peak-timer with a strong melodic curve, making a perfect successor to Ashley’s previous chart smashing hits ‘Keep The Fire’, ‘Zorro’ and ‘Bang The Drum’.
