Could “A Minecraft Movie” be the first major hit of the year to reach the billion-dollar milestone?
The film adaptation of the popular video game “Minecraft,” produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary and rated PG, is on a strong trajectory toward the coveted $1 billion mark. After just two weekends, its earnings have already surpassed $500 million globally. Specifically, the worldwide tally stands at $550.6 million, split between $269.6 million from international markets and $281 million from domestic theaters. This impressive sum makes it the top-earning movie of the year, surpassing Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has made $213 million internationally and $410 million worldwide over nine weeks.
In its latest weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” pulled in $79.6 million from 76 international markets, a 45% drop from its opening weekend abroad. The UK led with $39.8 million, followed by China with $20.3 million, Germany with $18.9 million, and Mexico close behind at $18.7 million.
Among the newest films, Disney and 20th Century’s action thriller “The Amateur” performed best, collecting $17.2 million across 52 markets. France was the top performer with $1.6 million, followed by the UK and Mexico, each contributing $1.4 million. Starring Rami Malek as a CIA analyst seeking revenge against the terrorists responsible for his wife’s death, “The Amateur” opened in North America with $15 million, leading to a global debut of $32.2 million. Despite these stronger-than-anticipated initial figures, its $60 million budget means the film still needs to maintain strong performance to be considered successful.
Another release, Universal and Blumhouse’s horror flick “Drop,” did not perform as well in its international release, earning just $2 million from 47 markets. It fared slightly better in North America, garnering $7.7 million for a global total of $10 million. Fortunately, with modest production costs of $11 million and generally positive reviews, “Drop” doesn’t need astronomical earnings to be profitable. In the film, Meghann Fahy from “The White Lotus” plays Violet, a widow who starts receiving sinister phone messages during a first date with Henry, portrayed by Brandon Sklenar of “It Ends With Us.”
