Star Wars Comic Teases Jar Jar's 'Pivotal Role' Forming the Rebel Alliance Following Revenge of the Sith

Are you curious about Jar Jar Binks’ journey after the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy? A forthcoming comic book, now part of the official Star Wars canon, promises to unveil the controversial character’s subsequent adventures, hinting at his significant involvement in the creation of the Rebel Alliance.

The new comic, titled Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks, is a special one-issue story co-authored by Ahmed Best, the actor behind Jar Jar, and Marc Guggenheim, a seasoned graphic novel writer. An interesting detail on one variant of the comic’s cover shows Jar Jar collaborating with Kelleran Beq, the composed Jedi portrayed by Best in a The Mandalorian episode.

The plot synopsis of the comic reveals, “Jar Jar confronts the repercussions of his decision to grant Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers. How crucial is Jar Jar’s role in the establishment of the Rebel Alliance? The issue features a guest appearance by the beloved Jedi Knight Kelleran Beq!”

Although Jar Jar Binks has not always been a fan favorite among the Star Wars community, his perception has softened over time. Younger audiences who were introduced to Star Wars through the prequels have grown up, and the ‘Darth Jar Jar’ theory has evolved into both a popular meme and a character in Fortnite. This shift reflects a broader sympathy for Best, who faced significant backlash during the peak of prequel criticism.

Following his extensive exposure in The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar’s presence was significantly reduced in subsequent films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, where he is briefly seen inadvertently aiding Palpatine’s ascension to power.

Although Jar Jar was absent from Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy, he reappears in the canon novel Aftermath: Empire’s End, set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, where he is depicted as a melancholic street performer who, despite being unpopular with adults, brings joy to children. This role reflects the character’s controversial status during the prequel era.

Best’s portrayal of Kelleran Beq in The Mandalorian, especially his daring rescue of Grogu during Order 66, has also helped rekindle affection for him among the fanbase. The question remains, however, whether this renewed fondness can extend to Jar Jar as well.

Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks is scheduled for release in February 2026.
