Star Wars: The Last Jedi

For those speculating about Mark Hamill’s possible return to the Star Wars universe as a Force ghost portraying Luke Skywalker, it appears that won’t be happening. The iconic actor has declared that he will not be revisiting the globally beloved sci-fi series, advocating instead for a focus on new characters and narratives moving forward.

During a promotional interview with ComicBook.com for his latest film, The Life of Chuck, the 73-year-old Hamill addressed questions about reprising his role in the upcoming Star Wars film centered on Rey, titled New Jedi Order. He definitively stated there would be no return for him, reminding fans that his character notably left his robes in the 2017 film, The Last Jedi.

Hamill expressed deep gratitude towards George Lucas for the opportunity to be part of Star Wars initially, recalling the early days when Lucas humorously referred to it as “the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.” He reflected on the unexpected transformation of Star Wars into a cultural phenomenon and a lasting franchise.

“It was an incredible time, and I’m thankful for it. However, it’s time they steer the story towards fresh faces and futures,” Hamill noted. He humorously added, “Besides, when I vanished in The Last Jedi, I left my robes behind. There’s absolutely no way I’m showing up as a naked Force ghost.”

Meanwhile, Rey is poised to make a comeback in the Star Wars saga under the direction of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in a sequel to the critically challenged Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker. This next chapter will explore Rey’s journey approximately 15 years later as she attempts to reestablish the Jedi Order.

Details about New Jedi Order remain scarce. In a January 2024 interview with AlloCiné, actress Daisy Ridley shared her excitement about the project, describing it as a unique and fantastic expansion of the Star Wars saga that diverges slightly from previous narratives.

Looking at other future projects, The Mandalorian and Grogu series is expected to debut in 2026, and Star Wars: Starfighter, a film by Shawn Levy featuring Ryan Gosling, is slated for a 2027 release.

During the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new films: a New Republic movie directed by Dave Filoni within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi film directed by James Mangold, and the previously mentioned New Jedi Order.

While the future of Star Wars is filled with potential shifts and twists, one constant remains clear: Mark Hamill’s portrayal of Luke as a Force ghost is not in the cards.
