Sonic Movie Reacts To Shrek 5's Divisive Character Redesigns

DreamWorks recently unveiled an early glimpse of “Shrek 5,” sparking a mix of reactions from viewers, particularly regarding the updated visual appearance of Shrek and his family. Many fans noted that Shrek’s revamped look seemed somewhat unusual compared to previous films. The official TikTok account for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie chimed in with a witty response.

Many fans might remember the initial backlash to Sonic’s design in his first movie, which many felt did not quite capture the essence of the iconic character. This led to a significant redesign after much public outcry, ultimately contributing to the Sonic film franchise’s impressive one billion dollar earnings to date.

On TikTok, the Sonic movie account posted a video for “any green ogres needing advice,” showcasing the transformation from the original to the redesigned Sonic. The post was humorously captioned, “Take notes!”

Star-Studded Cast and New Additions

“Shrek 5” will see the return of the beloved main characters, with Mike Myers voicing Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. Adding to the star power, Zendaya will join the cast as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. The film is scheduled for release in December 2026.

While DreamWorks has not yet disclosed specific details or the rationale behind the design changes for the upcoming film, a comparison image circulating online shows that Shrek and Donkey have indeed undergone a redesign.

A Look Back at the Shrek Saga

“Shrek 5” marks the franchise’s return after a long hiatus since “Shrek Forever After” in 2010. The original “Shrek” movie debuted in 2001, followed by “Shrek 2” in 2004 and “Shrek the Third” in 2007. The series also includes holiday specials like “Shrek the Halls” and “Scared Shrekless.” Among these, “Shrek 2” still holds the record as the highest-earning film of the franchise, with over $930 million in global box office revenue. Altogether, the four main films have grossed over $3 billion worldwide.

The success of “Shrek” led to the 2011 spin-off “Puss in Boots,” voiced by Antonio Banderas, with its sequel “The Last Wish” released in 2022. The franchise has also extended into the gaming world, with the latest venture being the 2024 “Shrek Swamp Tycoon” game on Roblox.

Enduring Popularity and Cultural Impact

Beyond films and games, the “Shrek” series has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring numerous memes and even boosting the profile of the band Smash Mouth with their song “All Star.” At Universal Orlando’s DreamWorks destination, a dedicated Shrek area continues to attract fans. Additionally, merchandise related to the Shrek movies remains widely popular, cementing its status as a beloved family entertainment brand.
