Also available is an $85 bundle that adds a T-shirt featuring the original theatrical poster artwork to the Collector’s Edition.

Bonus Features of Shin Godzilla Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-ray

All editions of the new 4K Blu-ray release come with an additional disc full of special features. These extras include a documentary on the making of Shin Godzilla, deleted scenes, production materials that reveal the creation of several special effects in the film, and more. The special features are provided in 1080p resolution. Here’s a detailed list of all the included bonus materials:

Directed by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, and Shinji Higuchi of Shin Ultraman, Shin Godzilla is the first new Japanese Godzilla movie since “Godzilla: Final Wars” in 2004. It restarts the franchise and returns the gigantic monster to its roots as a destructive force, with the Kaiju portrayed as an atomic-powered entity wreaking havoc in Tokyo, Japan. Drawing inspiration from the original 1954 movie—which used Godzilla as a symbol of America’s nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki—Shin Godzilla represents the monster as an allegory for the 2011 earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, which led to the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. Notably, it is also the most recent film to employ practical effects for Godzilla, showcasing the creature in his most grotesque and monstrous form.

Upon its debut in 2016, Shin Godzilla received extensive acclaim, marking the commencement of the “Reiwa Era” for Japanese Godzilla movies. Initially intended as a standalone feature, the production company Toho has recently announced plans to develop a sequel.

Godzilla: Minus One 4K Blu-ray

Following Shin Godzilla, Toho released another live-action film in the series, “Godzilla: Minus One,” written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. This movie, a reboot separate from Shin Godzilla, acts as a loose remake of the 1954 classic. It follows Koichi Shikishima, a would-be Kamikaze fighter pilot who sees a giant creature—Godzilla—destroy his airbase, resulting in trauma and a failed final mission. Returning home post-war, he faces ostracism in his hometown, which was devastated by US air raids. As he starts to rebuild his life, Godzilla re-emerges and attacks Japan.

Like its predecessor, Godzilla: Minus One was highly praised by critics at its release and even won the series’ first-ever Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023. A sequel is currently in production, expected to premiere in 2026. This creates three distinct live-action Godzilla continuities, including Hollywood’s MonsterVerse series. Since Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: Minus One each have only one film in their series thus far, they are relatively easy to catch up on. Godzilla: Minus One is available on 4K Blu-ray for $23.79 or standard Blu-ray for $16.53. For those interested in a deeper dive into the story, the official novelization of Minus One is up for pre-order with a release date of September 2, offering expanded scenes and additional content from the film.

Reiwa Era Godzilla Films and Novels

  • Godzilla: Minus One (4K Blu-ray) — $23.79 ($50)
  • Godzilla: Minus One (Blu-ray) — $16.53 ($40)
  • Novelization of Godzilla: Minus One (Paperback) — $16 | Available September 2
  • Shin Godzilla 4K Steelbook Edition — $47 | Available October 28

Fans of the Reiwa Era Godzilla films should also explore several other projects related to Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: Minus One. Noteworthy are the other two entries in Anno’s “Shin” trilogy: Shin Kamen Rider and Shin Ultraman, both offering new takes on the classic Tokusatsu heroes and available for streaming on Prime Video. Additionally, Toho’s Reiwa Era includes the sci-fi Godzilla Anime Trilogy, which reimagines the giant monster as a colossal planet-destroying titan. These films have received mixed reviews, but they are available on Netflix for those interested. Toho also produced the live-action Monster Hunter film adaptation directed by Paul WS Anderson, loosely based on the Capcom action RPG series. While the movie received mixed reviews, it featured impressive monster effects typical of a Toho production.

Hollywood Godzilla Films

Godzilla X Kong MonsterVerse 5-Film Blu-ray Collection

The third ongoing Godzilla live-action timeline is Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, which began in 2014 with “Godzilla,” directed by Gareth Edwards (Star Wars Rogue One, Jurassic World Rebirth). The series has expanded with several more entries, including “Kong: Skull Island,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and “Godzilla X Kong: New Empire.” Additionally, the TV series “Monarch” is available for streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV+, along with the MonsterVerse graphic novel. The next film, “Godzilla X Kong: Supernova,” is scheduled for release in 2027, giving fans ample time to catch up on the series. The best way to do this is with the Godzilla x Kong MonsterVerse 5-Film 4K Blu-ray Collection, available for $81, though each film is also available as a standalone release.

When discussing Hollywood-produced Godzilla films, it’s also worth mentioning the 1998 Godzilla movie directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Matthew Broderick. Despite being critically panned at the time, it has since gained a cult following that enjoys the “so-bad-it’s-good” appeal of Emmerich’s unique take on Japan’s iconic monster. If you’re interested in revisiting it, the film is available on 4K Blu-ray at Amazon.

Despite the initial negative reviews, this version of Godzilla was popular among children when it was released, leading to the creation of an animated cartoon series that ran for 40 episodes and is generally considered better and more enjoyable than the movie. The complete series is available on DVD at Amazon.

Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films Collection, 1954-1975

In addition to all the new films, there are dozens of classic Godzilla movies worth exploring, many of which have been re-released on Blu-ray. The best place to start is with the 1954 original Godzilla, available in a Criterion Collection Edition on 4K or standard Blu-ray. The Criterion Collection also offers a set of the Showa Era films, which includes all 15 Godzilla movies produced by Toho from 1954 to 1975. These are the oldest—and often silliest—films in the series, yet they remain enjoyable to watch.

Movies from the two Godzilla film eras that followed the Showa Era—the Heisei Era (1984-1995) and the Millennium Era (1999-2004)—are harder to find on Blu-ray, but some classics such as the Heisei Era’s Godzilla vs. Biollante or the Millennium Era’s Godzilla 2000 are available. • Godzilla: Final Wars / Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (Blu-ray) — $11.69 ($20)
  • Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah (1995) / Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus: The G Annihilation Strategy (Blu-ray) — $13.27 ($20)
