On October 17, Apple TV+ is set to debut “Mr. Scorsese,” a comprehensive five-part documentary series directed by the distinguished Rebecca Miller, known for her works such as “She Came to Me” and “Personal Velocity.” This series delves into the life and career of the iconic director Martin Scorsese.
The production team behind “Mr. Scorsese” was granted unparalleled and complete access to Scorsese’s personal archives and engaged in thorough interviews with him. Featuring discussions with Scorsese, his close associates, family, and a host of his creative partners including celebrities like Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, and others, the documentary provides a deep insight into his world. Esteemed colleagues such as Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, and Jodie Foster, alongside his family and long-time friends, also contribute to the narrative.
“Mr. Scorsese” explores how the varied and vibrant personal experiences of Scorsese shaped his unique artistic perspective. From his early days creating student films at New York University to his major cinematic endeavors, the documentary highlights the recurrent themes in his work, particularly the complex interplay of good versus evil within the human condition.
Director Rebecca Miller expressed her excitement about the project, noting the privilege of having such close access to industry legends, including Scorsese himself. She emphasized the depth of the documentary which not only appeals to die-hard Scorsese fans but also resonates with anyone who has ever faced adversity in pursuit of their dreams. Miller also teased a special reveal in the documentary—a never-before-shared anecdote about the making of “Taxi Driver,” highlighting Scorsese’s commitment to maintaining the film’s artistic integrity, which ultimately cemented its status as a cultural landmark.
The documentary “Mr. Scorsese” was initiated by executive producers Miller and Damon Cardasis under Round Films, and Cindy Tolan, a frequent collaborator of Miller’s. They are joined by an Emmy-nominated production team including Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly, and Julie Yorn, with Ron Burkle as a producer and Robert Fernandez and Patrick Walmsley as co-executive producers. The series is a collaborative effort by Expanded Media and Round Films, in association with LBI Entertainment and Moxie Pictures.
In a recently released teaser clip, Scorsese, along with peers like Steven Spielberg, discuss the challenges faced during the production of “Taxi Driver” and the extreme measures Scorsese took to ensure the film’s original vision was preserved.
