John Rambo: A Prequel in Development

The iconic character Rambo is poised for a comeback, this time with a prequel titled “John Rambo” in development, directed by Jalmari Helander, renowned for his work on “Sisu” and “Big Game”. The project is currently being introduced to potential backers at the Cannes market by Millennium Media, as reported by Deadline.

The Cannes market, which coincides with the Cannes Film Festival, serves as a platform for showcasing new film projects still in search of financial backing or distribution deals. Millennium Media, the company behind popular franchises such as the Expendables and Has Fallen series, and previously involved in the production of 2008’s “Rambo” and 2019’s “Rambo: Last Blood”, is spearheading this venture.

Details regarding the plot of “John Rambo” are scant, but it is confirmed that the setting will be during the Vietnam War and will act as a prequel to the 1982’s “First Blood”. As of now, no decisions have been made concerning the cast. Deadline has mentioned that Sylvester Stallone, the original star of the Rambo series, is aware of the project but has not been involved thus far.

The screenplay for “John Rambo” is penned by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, known for their work on “The Mauritanian” and “Black Adam”. The production is slated to commence shooting in Thailand starting October.

While the idea of a Rambo prequel might come as a surprise to many, Helander’s recent success with the 2023 action-packed WWII film “Sisu”, which features an elderly Finnish commando battling retreating Nazis in Finland after the Lapland War, shows he has the chops for high-octane cinematic storytelling. This upcoming project is promising for fans of the genre.
