Pokémon Go Developer Addresses Pay-to-Win Fears, as It Introduces Unprecedented $20 Premium Pass With Gold Bottle Cap That Boosts a Pokémon's Stats to 100%

The familiar Pokémon anime anthem encourages striving to be the ultimate best. Imagine if there was a superior in-game item that could gradually enhance your Pokémon’s abilities?

In Pokémon Go, the popular mobile extension of the Pokémon series, players will soon be able to access Gold Bottle Caps. These valuable items can improve a Pokémon’s statistics to a flawless 100%, also known among enthusiasts as a ‘hundo.’ However, acquiring these caps will not be easy or frequent.

Recently, Pokémon Go has made it possible for players to participate in various game activities from afar and has introduced items that confer the Lucky Friend status for enhanced stats when trading Pokémon. The advent of Bottle Caps represents a significant development, essentially trading real money for an in-game advantage—namely, superior stats for your Pokémon of choice.

The debut of the first Gold Bottle Cap will be through a new event pass priced at $19.99, the GO Pass Deluxe: Ancients Recovered, available from Monday, June 23 to Sunday, June 29. This is the most expensive event pass to date, compared to previous ones priced at $7.99 or $14.99. For the first time, there will also be overlapping event passes as the June monthly pass will still be active.

While a free version of the Ancients Recovered pass will be available, the coveted first Gold Bottle Cap will only come with the Deluxe version, which requires a purchase. The free pass includes an encounter with a Legendary Pokémon from the Regi family, three costume-clad Pikachus, along with Stardust, XP, and other items. The Deluxe version adds extra perks like Zacian and Zamazenta masks for avatars, plus premium items such as Incense, an Incubator, and Lure Modules, in addition to the Gold Bottle Cap.

Purchasing the premium upgrade through the Pokémon Go Web Store—outside the mobile app—avoids platform fees from Apple and Google, and also nets buyers 10 Max Revives, 10 Max Potions, five Premium Battle Passes, five Max Particle Packs, a Max Mushroom, and an additional Incubator. There’s also an even higher tier available, the GO Pass: Deluxe: Ancients Recovered + 10 Ranks, which instantly unlocks the first 10 event pass tiers and includes even more Incubators if purchased through the Web Store.

While full details on Gold Bottle Caps are set to be confirmed, the community has been buzzing with anticipation for months, following hints of the feature found by dataminers in the game’s code. Various implementation ideas have been discussed, with many fans speculating on the potential costs and impact on the game’s balance.

In a discussion before the announcement, Pokémon Go’s game director Michael Steranka assured that the introduction of Bottle Caps is designed to prevent the game from becoming a pay-to-win environment. He emphasized the rarity and effort required to use a Bottle Cap effectively, as it involves a comprehensive Hyper Training process for enhancing a Pokémon’s stats.

“This isn’t merely a pay and instantly power up your Pokémon system,” Steranka explained. The Hyper Training feature activated by a Gold Bottle Cap involves various tasks, like battling with the Pokémon set as your Buddy to increase its Attack stat, or strengthening your bond through play and exploration to boost its Defense. Leveling up a Pokémon’s HP will require adventuring together, spinning PokéStops, earning Buddy Candy, among other activities.

Steranka reiterated that such gameplay requirements are meant to maintain balance and ensure that players do not feel pressured into continuous spending. As the launch approaches, many players expressed a hope that Gold Bottle Caps would be distributed sparingly to maintain game balance and rarity.

While the frequency of Gold Bottle Cap availability is yet to be confirmed, Steranka assured they would remain a rare commodity and not just another item constantly purchasable in the game’s shop. In the past, similarly rare items like the Master Ball have been released only a few times, which might be a suitable model for the Bottle Caps, according to some players’ expectations.

Regarding pricing, some players speculate that the high cost is justified by the rarity of achieving a Pokémon with 100% stats through regular gameplay, such as repeated raiding attempts.

Steranka confirmed that initially, only the Gold Bottle Cap would be available, designed to elevate a Pokémon’s stats to their maximum. As Pokémon Go’s development team becomes part of Monopoly Go owner Scopely, following a significant acquisition deal, the game continues to evolve and expand its features.
