Nexus Mods Owner Steps Down After 24 Years to Focus on Mental Health

Nexus Mods, a central hub for PC gaming modifications, has changed ownership for the first time in its 24-year history. Founder Robin “Dark0ne” Scott has decided to hand over control, citing mental health reasons.

In a recent announcement, the prominent leader of this major gaming platform disclosed that he has stepped down from his role at Nexus Mods after extensive discussions and self-reflection over several months. This decision marks a significant transition for the site.

While keeping specific details confidential, the announcement reveals that two new figures, Victor (also known as Foledinho) and Marinus (also known as Rapsak), have taken up the mantle of leadership. Both are now listed as “Site Owner” on their profiles, signifying a fresh start for Nexus Mods and a well-deserved respite for Scott.

“Managing the giant that I built has been overwhelming.

“Managing the giant that I built has been overwhelming,” Scott stated. “The ongoing pressures of the role have led to constant anxiety and stress-related health problems. Realizing I was on the verge of burnout, which was affecting my team and the entire Nexus Mods community, I concluded that stepping down was necessary for the site’s future success and for bringing in new leadership to rejuvenate our community,” he added.

What started as a small project in Scott’s bedroom for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has grown into a significant force in the gaming world. According to the Nexus Mods “About Us” page, the site boasts 63.4 million users and 16.8 billion file downloads, making it one of the top UK-based websites globally.

As Nexus Mods expanded, so did the demands on Scott, who has been “on call” every single day for over two decades. His reduced involvement in daily operations will inevitably lead to some changes, but he reassures users that these should not be a concern.

This is me taking a step I should have taken long ago: prioritizing my well-being.

“I’ve gradually been delegating more responsibilities over the years,” Scott elaborates. “The team has increasingly taken the lead, and the site has flourished. What’s changing now is simply the official status, ensuring the right people are in place to propel Nexus Mods into its new chapter.”

Scott emphasizes that his resignation, along with a few minor structural adjustments, are designed to ensure the “long-term stability” of Nexus Mods and will not affect its current operations. He asserts, “Nexus Mods remains dedicated to its community and mod authors; this commitment is non-negotiable.”

Even as he steps back from his role as leader, Scott will continue to interact with the Nexus Mods community through various platforms like the Mod Author Discord and forums. He will also remain involved in guiding the site’s 40-person team through this transition.

“Indeed, the ownership of Nexus Mods has shifted, but rest assured, this isn’t a corporate sell-out or secretive deal,” Scott clarifies. “This is about me finally prioritizing my health, reclaiming some peace of mind, and letting go of the notion that I must handle and control everything on my own.”

For decades, Nexus Mods has been a home for thousands of fan-made mods for popular game franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Stardew Valley, Baldur’s Gate, Cyberpunk 2077, and many others. Just after The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was unexpectedly released earlier this year, the site quickly saw a surge of new mods. As a favorite spot for PC gamers to customize their gaming experience, the platform’s leadership change introduces some uncertainty about its future direction.
