In the latter half of 2024, activity on Netflix reached new heights, with the second season of the Korean sensation “Squid Game” emerging as the platform’s most popular TV show.
Netflix users clocked in over 94 billion viewing hours during the last six months of the previous year, marking a 5% increase from the year before, as detailed in the latest Engagement Report which spans from July to December 2024.
Launched on December 26, “Squid Game” Season 2 quickly became the most-watched series during this period, amassing nearly 87 million views in just six days. Despite these impressive numbers, no single show made up more than 1% of Netflix’s total viewership; “Squid Game 2” itself accounted for only 0.7%. This statistic underscores Netflix’s strategy of diversifying its portfolio with a broad array of high-quality content, ensuring that subscribers have compelling reasons to keep watching. “This is why we invest in a wide variety of quality shows and films and why we strive for excellence in every project. We want to make sure that when a member logs into Netflix, they find something great to watch,” Netflix stated in a recent blog post.
Netflix measures viewership by dividing the total hours watched by the runtime of each show or film. The Engagement Report, now published biannually, covers approximately 99% of all viewing activity on the platform, according to data self-reported by Netflix. (Below, you can see the lists of the top 10 TV shows and films on Netflix for this period.)
