In a recent announcement, both the game’s developer and its publisher, 2K, shared their insights. Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13, described the game as offering a “focused, linear experience” that excels in narrating a quality story, providing a deep dive into an authentic historical period, and refining the gameplay elements associated with the Mafia series.
Baynes elaborated that the game’s narrative is “gritty, grounded, brutal, and emotional.” Set in early 20th century Sicily, it narrates the origin story of the mafia through the journey of Enzo Favara, who ascends the ranks of Don Torrisi’s criminal family after taking the oath.
David Ismailer, President of 2K, also commented, emphasizing the game’s appeal to those who prefer engaging stories without the commitment of extensive gameplay hours.
Ismailer expressed enthusiasm about adding “Mafia: The Old Country” to 2K’s portfolio, highlighting its linear, polished narrative that complements the more expansive, ongoing games that players enjoy.
From these insights, it is clear that “Mafia: The Old Country” will be a concise game, focusing solely on its single-player story, as it lacks a multiplayer component.
This might explain why the game is priced at $49.99 for the standard edition and $59.99 for the deluxe edition on all supported platforms. According to 2K:
Two versions of “Mafia: The Old Country” are available for pre-order – the Standard Edition and the Deluxe Edition, both set to be released globally on the specified date.
- The Standard Edition includes the complete base game and is priced at $49.99 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
- The Deluxe Edition offers a deep dive into the Sicilian mafia life with extra content and is available for $59.99 on the same platforms. This edition includes the Padrino Pack, featuring an assortment of exclusive weapons, outfits, and a limousine and horse with accessories. It also comes with the Gatto Nero Pack that includes a unique pistol, racing outfit, race car, as well as a digital soundtrack and an artbook containing concept art and developer notes.
- Pre-ordering either edition will also grant access to the Soldato Pack, which includes additional exclusive apparel, weapons, and accessories.
In an interview, the creators clarified that unlike GTA 6, “Mafia: The Old Country” should not be mistaken for an open-world game.
Instead, they emphasized its similarities to the first two games in the Mafia series, describing it as a “linear, narrative-driven” game that delivers a “cinematic experience”. While it does feature periods of driving or horseback riding in a historically accurate 1900s Sicily, it distinctly sets itself apart from typical open-world games.
