Darth Maul, a character whose resilience mirrors that of iconic horror figures like Michael Meyers or Jason Voorhees, continues to captivate audiences with his repeated returns from defeat. “It’s a running joke with the Lucasfilm Animation team that no matter how many times you think Maul is gone, he keeps coming back. It’s part of the charm of Star Wars, really. This time around, we’re really exploring Maul’s backstory in depth within the narratives,” explained a member of the team.
Highlighting the advancements in production techniques, Portillo emphasized significant improvements across various aspects of Lucasfilm Animation’s workflow, such as “animation quality, lighting effects, matte paintings, and asset creation.”
“Post-Covid, when Filoni launched the Maul project, he pushed the team to step outside their comfort zones. He stressed that feeling uncomfortable was a pathway to achieving greatness. He urged everyone to surpass previous standards in animation, including body mechanics and facial expressions. We’ve upgraded our rigs and enhanced our lighting significantly,” Portillo shared. “After viewing a recent episode, Filoni’s response was enthusiastic, praising the team for producing what he described as cinematic quality. He’s truly proud of what we’ve accomplished with this series.”
Portillo added, “This show is a step beyond anything we’ve previously done, surpassing even recent projects like The Bad Batch and Tales of the Underworld, which we just finished. We are set to release Maul in 2026, but there’s still more work to be done.”
In the upcoming Tales of the Underworld, each villain, Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, will be featured in three episodes, totaling six episodes. The narrative for Ventress revolves around her chance for redemption offered by Mother Talzin. “Ventress encounters a young boy in the first episode, leading to a tale of two Jedi fugitives and the development of their relationship across the three episodes,” Portillo elaborated.
Ventress’s story in the Dark Disciple novel, where she experiences death and rebirth, has left some ambiguity about its canonical status. Portillo confirms that Tales of the Underworld picks up where that storyline left off. “The dynamic between Quinlan Vos and Ventress is particularly poignant; fans were deeply moved when Vos professed his eternal love. It’s these forbidden romances, similar to those of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Satine, or Padme and Anakin, that resonate deeply with the audience,” she said.
Portillo also noted that Ventress is actively confronting her past. “Upon reintroduction, she’s at a crossroads, contemplating whether to detach from her historical affiliations or embrace a darker path. The new character introduced in this series will play a crucial role in helping her navigate these choices, providing a counterbalance that may lead to personal growth,” she added.
Both series promise to be compelling additions to the Star Wars saga. While Tales of the Underworld is set to debut on Disney+ on May 4, 2025, the release date for Maul: Shadow Lord remains highly anticipated but unannounced.
