Jon M. Chu Says Britney Spears Biopic Not Casting Yet Amid Reports of Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Millie Bobby Brown Battling for Role

Jon M. Chu, the acclaimed director of "Wicked," is addressing speculation about the casting for his much-anticipated Britney Spears biographical film. On the social media platform X, Chu clarified that his project hasn’t started the casting phase, despite rumors that Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Millie Bobby Brown are vying for the role of the legendary singer.

Chu firmly stated, “None of this is true. It sounds exciting but we haven’t discussed casting for the movie yet. We are still very early in the development process. Sorry.” This response comes amidst circulating gossip suggesting these popular actresses are in contention to portray Spears.

Previously, Chu collaborated with Grande, leading her to an Oscar nomination through "Wicked," and they are set to continue their successful partnership with the upcoming sequel, "Wicked: For Good," scheduled for release this November. Universal Pictures, which is also behind the Britney Spears biopic, secured the rights to the film last August. The biopic will draw from Spears’ highly successful memoir, "The Woman in Me," which has sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Spears’ memoir delves into her ascent to pop fame, beginning with her early days on the "Mickey Mouse Club" and moving through her much-publicized conservatorship battle. The audiobook version, narrated by Michelle Williams with an introduction by Spears herself, has become the fastest-selling audiobook in the history of Simon & Schuster. The specific focus of the biopic, whether it will cover her entire life or zero in on a particular aspect, remains undisclosed.

When her memoir was launched in October 2023, Spears expressed her deep emotional investment in the project, saying, “I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support.”

Since the announcement of the biopic, fans have eagerly speculated on social media about who might play Spears, with names like Olivia Holt, star of "Heart Eyes," emerging as a fan favorite. Holt expressed her enthusiasm about the possibility in an interview with The Bangin Beats earlier this year, stating, “It would be a dream to play Spears. I would be so honored.”

As anticipation builds, the film community and Spears’ fans alike are keen to see who will ultimately be chosen to portray the pop icon, though they will have to wait until the official casting process begins.
