James Cameron's Avatar Fire and Ashes

A saga that finally meets its deadlines

James Cameron continues his epic on Pandora with a highly anticipated third installment. “Avatar: Fire and Ashes” unveiled its first trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. This is the only film in the saga whose release has not been postponed several times. Cameron shot the following films at the same time, which explains this unusual punctuality. Exhibitors present at the event were able to admire these 3D images. Audiences will have to wait a little longer to see the trailer online.

New Na’vi clans and a war in the skies

The first images reveal two new groups of Na’vi with fascinating characteristics. The Wind Merchants ride elegant hot-air balloons across the skies of Pandora. Their opponents, the Men of Fire, ride Ikran flying creatures. A spectacular aerial battle shows a Na’vi killed by a flaming arrow.

Jake Sully confides in Neytiri his concerns about this violence: “We can’t live like this. We can’t live with this hate.” Zoe Saldaña, present at CinemaCon, clarified that the Wind Merchants are a peaceful, nomadic clan. The Ash People, on the other hand, are Na’vi who have disowned their goddess Eywa.

A story that continues the tale of “La Voie de l’Eau” (The Way of Water)

The plot begins just after the events of the second film. The Sully family is still battling the Resource Development Administration. They are also mourning the loss of their son Neteyam, killed in action. Having taken refuge with the aquatic Metkayina clan, they now face a formidable new enemy.

Their battle will take them through Pandora’s diverse environments. From oceans to mountains, forests and skies. The leader of the Water clan expresses his despair in the trailer: “We cannot defeat this enemy who comes from the stars.” This statement foreshadows insurmountable challenges for the protagonists.

James Cameron absent but involved

The director was unable to attend the event in person. He is currently working in New Zealand to finalize the film. Cameron appeared in a pre-recorded video to present his new project. He joked about the challenges the Sully family will face in the film. “They’ll have to face not only human invaders, but also the Ash People.

“The filmmaker apologized for his absence with humor. “I’m just finishing up ‘Avatar: Fire and Ashes’, which is a good use of my time considering the film arrives like a freight train on December 19.”

Crucial support for cinemas

Cameron stressed the importance of this release for the film industry. “I hope this film will give exhibitors a boost.” The first two “Avatar” films each generated more than $2 billion at the global box office. They are among the most successful films in cinema history.

If the third film achieves similar figures, “Avatar” will become the only franchise with three films exceeding 2 billion. This performance would even surpass the Marvel universe, which only has two. Cameron already holds a record with three films over 2 billion, including “Titanic”.

Conclusion

“Avatar: Fire and Ashes” will be released on December 19, 2024, just before the festive season. Planning for the saga is already stretching far into the future. “Avatar 4” is scheduled for December 21, 2029. “Avatar 5” will conclude the saga on December 19, 2031. Disney, which distributes these films, took advantage of CinemaCon to present other major projects.

The studio showed glimpses of “Thunderbolts”, “Fantastic Four”, “Zootopia 2” and several other productions. Andrew Cripps, head of worldwide distribution, emphasized Disney’s commitment to the cinematic experience. “Disney films stay in theaters longer than those of our competitors. This is no accident. We believe in the cinema experience.” This statement reassures exhibitors in a context where streaming is gaining ground.
