Devastating floods hit summer camp
Texas was recently hit by violent floods that particularly affected Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Located along the swollen Guadalupe River, the facility was submerged with 750 children inside. This emergency situation required the immediate intervention of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Scott Ruskan: a hero on his first mission
Scott Ruskan, a 26-year-old Coast Guard cutter, was called in as emergency backup on the night of July 4. For his very first rescue mission, he boarded a helicopter at around 7 a.m. for a journey of almost 6 hours, made difficult by the storm.
When he arrived on site, he discovered a critical situation: “I discovered that I was the only rescue worker there. There were around 200 people, most of them children. They were probably having the worst day of their lives.”
An exceptional act of courage
Faced with this dramatic situation, Scott Ruskan made a courageous decision: to get out of the helicopter and stay on the ground, coordinating the evacuations directly. This decision enabled him to free up space in the aircraft for more children.
“I thought I could be much more useful on site. The children were in pyjamas, sometimes with only one shoe on. Soaking wet, freezing cold, exhausted. And they were looking for their friends,” he told the New York Times.
165 lives saved by one man
As the only triage coordinator on the scene, Scott Ruskan managed the feat of personally saving 165 children. He was responsible for collecting the victims scattered around the scene, comforting them and coordinating their evacuation.
“Everyone looks at you, terrified, waiting for some form of comfort, someone to save them,” he recalls of those intense moments when every gesture counted.
Well-deserved national recognition
Scott Ruskan’s heroism has been recognized at the highest level by Homeland Security. Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, said on X: “Scott Ruskan is an American hero. His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the Coast Guard.
“This recognition underscores the exceptional bravery he demonstrated on his first rescue mission.
