An act of cruelty filmed in Belgium

On Friday July 4, a shocking scene unfolded in the Belgian town of Dalhem. A motorist was filmed dragging his dog, a German Shepherd, behind his car. The animal’s leash was wedged between the doors of the vehicle, which was sometimes travelling at over 80 km/h, turning the walk into a real ordeal for the animal.

A damning testimony

Victoria, a resident of the Liège region, filmed the dramatic sequence and posted her testimony on Facebook. After honking the horn several times to alert the driver, she confronted him directly: “I then asked him if he thought it was normal to treat his animal in this way.

The man’s chillingly cynical response was, “I do what I want, it’s my dog.” Victoria then witnessed an even more traumatic scene: “Shortly afterwards, this man untied the poor animal, already lifeless, and deposited it in the boot of his car like a common thing.”

Internet users’ anger explodes

Victoria’s publication quickly went viral, provoking a massive wave of indignation on social networks. Internet users managed to identify the identity of the dog’s owner, who found himself overwhelmed by an avalanche of hate messages and death threats. A petition calling for “justice for the dragged dog” was launched, testifying to the scale of the stir caused by this affair.

Escalation: from mob justice to arson

Serge Fillot, the mayor of Oupeye, confirmed the event: “I was told that someone had set fire to the dog owner’s house. Fortunately, he managed to get out on his own.” The mayor stressed the seriousness of this escalation: “We’ve moved on. From the dramatic, cruel death of a dog, with a person who will have to explain himself, this has become a manhunt.”

The suspect’s version

For his part, the suspect went to the police to give his version of events. He claims that the animal jumped out of the window without him realizing it, an explanation that contrasts sharply with eyewitness accounts and film footage.

Penalties incurred

If the man is found guilty of animal abuse, he could face a fine of between €100 and €1 million, a prison sentence of between 8 days and 3 years, and the withdrawal of his license to keep an animal. These penalties, provided for under Belgian law, testify to the growing awareness of animal protection issues.

Conclusion

This tragic case illustrates the possible excesses of mob justice in the age of social networking. While indignation at animal mistreatment is legitimate and understandable, the arson attempt shows how collective emotion can transform a demand for justice into a criminal act.
