Dan Aykroyd, a comedic icon, recently set the record straight regarding his role as Ray Stantz in the 1995 movie Casper, confirming that his appearance is officially part of the original Ghostbusters universe created by Ivan Reitman in 1984.
When speaking on the Talking Strange podcast, Aykroyd was asked whether his cameo should be considered canonical. He responded affirmatively, noting, “Steven Spielberg specifically requested my participation for the scene, and they tailored it for me. It’s definitely a respectful homage to what we created with Ivan [Reitman] and the team. It absolutely belongs in the Ghostbusters narrative.”

This revelation surely comes as a relief to fans, affirming that Stantz did indeed attempt to capture the most amiable ghost, Casper, though without success.
For those unfamiliar, here’s a brief recap of the memorable scene. In Casper, the narrative revolves around Whipstaff Manor, inhabited by Casper and his three mischievous uncles. Carrigan Crittenden, portrayed by Cathy Moriarty, inherits the mansion and discovers it hides a valuable secret. Determined to claim it, she tries to evict the spectral residents, initially calling on ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci). Before their arrival, Ray Stantz tests his luck.
Sporting a new mustache, the ghostbuster enters the haunted house only to quickly leave, humorously quipping, “Who ya gonna call? Someone else.”
Aykroyd is one of the original four Ghostbusters, alongside Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler, and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore. The Casper movie also stars Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, Christina Ricci, and features Devon Sawa as the voice of Casper, appearing in person in the final scenes.
Ghostbusters is currently available for streaming on The Roku Channel, and Casper is available on Netflix.
