Two Arrested in Connection With Alleged Bomb Threat at Lady Gaga’s Rio de Janeiro Concert

On the evening of May 3, Lady Gaga delivered an enormous complimentary performance on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Shortly before the event, law enforcement in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul apprehended a man for illegal possession of firearms, while a young individual was detained in Rio de Janeiro on allegations of child pornography, both linked to a supposed scheme to set off homemade bombs at the concert.

The Justice Ministry of Brazil described the adult suspect as the head of a group hostile towards LGBTQ+ individuals. Reuters reported that this group allegedly lured people, including minors, to execute coordinated bombings using DIY explosives and Molotov cocktails by posing as fans of Lady Gaga, who are affectionately termed Little Monsters, across various online platforms and social networks. Local police conducted further operations, raiding the residences of 15 individuals implicated nationwide. Despite these threats, the concert went on as scheduled and occurred without any disturbances. According to The Associated Press, officials chose not to inform the event organizers at the moment to prevent undue panic and misinformation.

Titled “Mayhem on the Beach,” this concert marked Lady Gaga’s first show in Brazil since 2012 and attracted a record-breaking crowd of 2.5 million people, the largest ever for a female artist’s concert. This surpassed the previous record set by Madonna during her 2024 Celebration Tour at Copacabana Beach. Earlier today, Lady Gaga expressed her emotions on Instagram, stating, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away.” Her full message can be seen below.

Recently, Lady Gaga released Mayhem, her seventh studio album, in March. She premiered several tracks from this album live at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where she was a headline performer. This year has been busy for her, with performances at the Grammy Awards—where she clinched Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with Bruno Mars for their duet “Die With a Smile”—the 2025 Super Bowl, and on Saturday Night Live. Lady Gaga is set to continue her global Mayhem Ball Tour with a four-night stint at Singapore’s National Stadium starting May 18.

Lady Gaga shared:

Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world—I know I can’t, but I can say this—if you lose your way, you can find your way back if you believe in yourself and work hard. You can give yourself dignity by rehearsing your passion and your craft, pushing yourself to new heights— you can lift yourself up even if it takes some time. Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back. Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.
