Playground Productions Expands Backyard Sports Universe with New Animated Feature
Following the successful revival of the Backyard Sports series last year, Playground Productions is now venturing into animation by partnering with Lighthouse Studios, known for their work on The Cuphead Show, to create a new animated special based on Backyard Baseball. The special, named “Sticky Situation,” will be rendered in vibrant 2D animation.
According to a report by Deadline, the animated short will feature voices from renowned actors including Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Bad Boys: Ride or Die) as Kiesha Phillips, and Arturo Castro (Tron: Ares, Narcos) as the beloved character Pablo Sanchez. Despite these star contributions, the narrative will primarily revolve around Stephane “Bubbles” Morgan. Ego Nwodim, recognized for her tenure on SNL and her recent role as Twiggy in Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, will bring “Bubbles” to life.
The Plot of “Sticky Situation”
The story is set during the opening day at Steele Stadium, where the team’s star player, Stephanie “Bubbles” Morgan, faces a personal crisis. She discovers that her lucky bubble gum, which she considers essential for playing, is missing. With the clock ticking down to game time, the Backyard kids embark on a frantic quest to find the gum and salvage their season.
Joining the adventure are additional cast members such as Chris Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Kick-Ass), Donald Faison (Clueless, Scrubs), Ashleigh Crystal Hairston (Craig of the Creek), and Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog movies).
Revisiting and Expanding the Backyard Sports Franchise
Last year marked a significant milestone for Playground Productions, as they released a remastered version of Backyard Baseball ’97. This release was part of a broader initiative to revive the beloved Backyard Sports series. Since then, titles like Backyard Football ’99, Backyard Baseball ’01, and Backyard Soccer ’98 have also been reintroduced to fans on various digital platforms, including PC and mobile devices. Looking forward, the company plans to continue this trend by remastering Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02.
The premiere of the “Sticky Situation” animated special is eagerly anticipated on the Backyard Sports YouTube channel as well as in Dave & Buster’s locations across the United States. However, a specific release date for the special has not yet been announced.
