André 3000 Unveils New Instrumental Collection: 7 Piano Sketches
Unexpectedly, André 3000 has dropped a new instrumental album titled 7 Piano Sketches. This collection consists of seven piano-centric tracks, introduced by either André himself, Emmy Paalman, or Fatima Robinson, who recite the titles of the songs. The tracks are embellished with vocal effects and scattered samples, including a distinctive laugh track on the piece titled “Off Rhythm Laughter.” Check out the album below.
In a press statement, André 3000 shared, “Originally, I wanted to call it The Best Worst Rap Album in History. Here’s a snippet from what the original liner notes said: ‘It humorously claims the title of the worst rap album ever because it lacks lyrics entirely. Yet, it’s the best as it expresses the freest range of emotions I’ve ever felt and marks a personal peak. It’s exceptional as it acts like a refreshing reset for me.’”
The Genesis of 7 Piano Sketches
The initial ideas for 7 Piano Sketches emerged almost ten years ago. André 3000 found the inspiration while residing in a minimalistic Texas home with his son, which was furnished only with a piano, two beds, and several television screens. After living with these recordings for a while, André felt compelled to expand on them and chose to release them in the spring, symbolizing a season of continuous renewal in life, creativity, and possibilities, according to a press release.
André 3000’s choice of a late-night release for this project was deliberate. It coincided with his attendance at the 2025 Met Gala in New York, where he showcased a unique piano-themed outfit designed by Burberry, in collaboration with Benji Bixby—an evolution of his late 2000s fashion line Benjamin Bixby—and styled by Law Roach. His ensemble seemed to complement the artwork on the cover of 7 Piano Sketches.
André 3000’s Recent Musical Journey
7 Piano Sketches marks André 3000’s first release since his 2023 flute-centric album New Blue Sun, which was his first solo album as the Outkast rapper. That album earned him three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. The 2024 short film Moving Day, directed by Dexter Navy, captured the creation of New Blue Sun and featured a track that had not been previously released from those recording sessions.
