The End of the Road for ‘The Wheel of Time’ on Prime Video
Prime Video has officially pulled the plug on ‘The Wheel of Time’ after its third season, marking the end of its journey on the streaming platform.
According to a report by Deadline, after extensive discussions, Prime Video opted not to renew ‘The Wheel of Time’ for a fourth season. Despite the show’s executives showing appreciation for the series, the financial aspects ultimately led to its cancellation.
‘The Wheel of Time’ is based on the beloved fantasy novel series by Robert Jordan and features Rosamund Pike in a leading role. The series initially received mixed reviews from book fans due to significant deviations in the first two seasons. However, the third season managed to regain their support and seemed to promise an even more engaging future for the series.
The decision to cancel the series has left many fans disheartened, particularly because there remains much more of the story to explore. The production costs, shared by co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, were reportedly too high. Notably, Amazon MGM Studios is also behind the highly expensive production of ‘The Lord Of the Rings: The Rings Of Power.’
As Deadline explained:
“… the overall performance of Season 3 did not justify the series’ high production costs in the eyes of Prime Video. Despite exploring various options and holding discussions with the main production company, Sony TV, the streaming service could not find a viable way to continue the series,” sources reported.
