New Insights from Sony vs. Tencent Legal Battle
In the midst of the legal confrontation between Sony and Tencent, previously undisclosed details are coming to light. One of the latest pieces of information to surface concerns the future release of a live-action movie based on PlayStation’s Horizon series. According to a declaration by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, the film is targeted for a 2027 release.
During his sworn testimony on October 16, Qizilbash mentioned that the production team already possesses a draft script and is in the process of finding a suitable director, although no potential candidates have been publicly identified. He outlined plans to start filming in 2026 with the aim of releasing the movie the following year, as reported by The Game Post.
PlayStation Productions has previously collaborated with Columbia Pictures, which like PlayStation Productions, is under Sony’s umbrella. Their joint ventures include projects like the Uncharted movie featuring Tom Holland and the film adaptation of Gran Turismo.
Background of the Legal Issue
This revelation came to light due to its relevance to the ongoing lawsuit. Sony is accusing Tencent of creating a game called Light of Motiram, which Sony claims is a blatant copy of its Horizon series. Qizilbash emphasized the significance of Horizon’s protagonist, Aloy, describing her as a pivotal figure in PlayStation’s strategy for franchise development.
It was previously anticipated that Horizon would be adapted into a live-action series by Netflix. However, these plans were shelved following allegations of workplace misconduct involving Steve Blackman, the showrunner for The Umbrella Academy, who was linked to the Horizon series.
Expanding PlayStation’s Universe
The Horizon movie is part of a broader initiative by PlayStation to adapt several of its gaming franchises into films or television series. Among these are a Helldivers movie, both anime and live-action adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima, a Days Gone film, and a television series based on God of War. Additionally, the successful television adaptation of The Last of Us, a game developed by Naughty Dog, is set to return for its third and possibly last season in 2027.

Further details from the Sony vs. Tencent lawsuit revealed Tencent’s previous interest in collaborating with Sony on The Last of Us and Horizon projects. However, Sony declined Tencent’s proposal for a Horizon game, after which Tencent proceeded to develop what Sony has labeled a “slavish clone” in the form of Light of Motiram.
