Box Office: Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘One Battle After Another’ Kicks Off With $22 Million

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest cinematic offering, the comedic action thriller “One Battle After Another,” launched to the top of the box office, earning $22.4 million across 3,634 theaters in North America during its opening weekend. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as a former revolutionary now evading capture, the movie also pulled in $26.1 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $48.5 million.

Initial reactions from box office analysts are mixed regarding these numbers. For a movie that was produced with a budget of over $130 million and marketed with an additional $70 million, a $20 million opening might seem underwhelming. “One Battle After Another” needs to generate approximately $300 million globally to just break even, considering the typical revenue split of 50-50 between movie studios and theater operators.

Although the film is an original R-rated creation and runs nearly three hours, it lacks the automatic audience that established franchises enjoy. Unlike blockbuster series such as “Superman” or “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” generating buzz and attracting viewers might be a slower process. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. has consistently exceeded box office expectations with a variety of hits since April, ranging from family-friendly “A Minecraft Movie” and “Superman” to more adult-themed successes like “Sinners,” “Weapons,” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”

Movie industry consultant David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research believes the movie could reach profitability if it maintains a strong presence in theaters or performs exceptionally well overseas. He notes that while the film is likely to receive numerous awards nominations, these accolades won’t significantly impact its immediate box office results.

The film has been well-received, earning an “A” on CinemaScore and a 96% average on Rotten Tomatoes, which bodes well for its continued performance in theaters. Additionally, its earnings are boosted by premium large formats like Imax and Dolby, which command higher ticket prices; these formats accounted for a substantial 51% of its domestic earnings, according to Warner Bros.

The film’s success will also test DiCaprio’s draw at the box office. Despite director Anderson’s reputation as one of his generation’s finest filmmakers, his films typically do not attract massive box office numbers. For example, Anderson’s top-grossing film, “There Will Be Blood,” made $76.4 million globally in 2007. DiCaprio, on the other hand, is a proven box office magnet with massive hits like “Titanic,” “Inception,” and “The Revenant” under his belt.

In “One Battle After Another,” DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary hiding out with his daughter, Willa (played by newcomer Chase Infiniti), until his past catches up with him. The film’s initial audience was predominantly male (65%) and over the age of 25 (42%).

Competing against “One Battle After Another” were Universal’s “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” and Lionsgate’s “The Strangers: Chapter 2,” with the former opening at $13.5 million and the latter at a disappointing $5.9 million.

“Gabby’s Dollhouse,” based on the popular Netflix series, matched expectations and is projected to enjoy a long run due to its strong reception (an “A+” CinemaScore). Meanwhile, “The Strangers: Chapter 2” suffered from poor reviews and audience ratings, which will likely hinder its performance at the box office.

Rounding out the top box office spots were “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” with the former setting records as the highest-grossing anime release ever in North America.

Conversely, other recent releases like “Him” and “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” saw significant drops in their second week, struggling to attract viewers against the stiff competition.
