‘These Things Aren't New and Exclusive to Soulslike Games' — Silent Hill f Producer Wants to Set the Record Straight on Combat

Moreover, Silent Hill f introduces combat dynamics such as timed dodges and crucial counterattacks. Counterattack opportunities are briefly indicated by enemies, and mastering them is essential, though challenging without quick reflexes honed by games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. For aiding in these situations, the game incorporates a Focus mode, activated by holding L2, which prolongs counterattacks and charges up a powerful attack that can stagger foes.

Discussions about parries and counterattacks have raised eyebrows among some fans of Silent Hill, and Konami’s announcement that the combat intensity in Silent Hill f has been heightened to appeal to the “younger players who prefer challenging action games” has divided its community.

“We often see the term ‘soulslike’ being used extensively online,” he explained. “It’s somewhat misleading. Players notice features like stamina meters and dodging mechanics and quickly label it as ‘soulslike’.

“However, many of these elements are actually borrowed from earlier Silent Hill games. For example, Silent Hill 4 had a charge meter similar to our Focus meter, and Silent Hill 3 incorporated a stamina meter later in the game,” he added.

Okamoto clarified that the combat features of Silent Hill f are not unique to the soulslike category, expressing irritation with the ongoing online discussions about the game’s genre.

“These mechanics are not novel to only soulslike games,” he remarked. “They have been integral to action horror games for a long time. Just because a game includes these elements doesn’t mean it should be tagged as soulslike. We emphasize that we are an action horror game, not a soulslike,” he asserted.

Silent Hill f is set for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on September 25.
