Marvel Director Says New Movie The Gorge Is Inspired By These Video Games

Scott Derrickson Launches New Film “The Gorge” on Apple TV Plus

Scott Derrickson, known for his work on Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, has released a new film titled “The Gorge” available on Apple TV Plus. This latest project draws creative influence from iconic video games, particularly Until Dawn and Silent Hill. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Derrickson expressed his admiration for these games, highlighting their exceptional handling of action sequences with one or two main characters.

“I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gunplay action, especially if you’re really with a single character or two characters, you kind of can’t beat it,” Derrickson remarked to GamesRadar.

For those just tuning in, “The Gorge” features Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy portraying expert snipers. Their mission starts off in a gorge, and as daylight turns to darkness, their situation intensifies, requiring them to cooperate closely. GamesRadar, having previewed the film, noted that parts of it echo the atmospheric and tense gameplay of The Last of Us and Silent Hill.

Derrickson also touched on the challenges he faced in crafting “The Gorge,” particularly in balancing intense action sequences reminiscent of video games without overwhelming the audience. The film is designed to merge various genres, drawing richly from the world of gaming for its narrative and stylistic elements.

The screenplay for “The Gorge” was penned by Zach Dean, who has credits on other action-packed films such as Fast X, The Tomorrow War, and Deadfall. The movie made its debut on Apple TV Plus on February 14.
